Three hundred sixty five days after November 19th, 2000, a fully grown, peaceful, knowledgeable women, who I love to call my mother, laid out multiple objects on the cold, clean marble floor for me to choose from. The objects laid out on the thick and hard flooring include: a used notebook, a dead battery, a calculator, a stethoscope and a wooden twelve-inch ruler. Out of these objects, I, still just an infant, picked up the stethoscope without realizing. Although my memories of this event are practically non-existent, I remember my caring mother telling me the story of my first birthday and providing pictures of me picking up the stethoscope. A surgical technologists also known as “scrub tech” and “operating room technicians” provide assistance to the surgeon during surgical operations. Scrub techs also prepare the operating room and equipment by sterilizing everything before and after to prevent infections and other mishaps for the patient receiving surgery. Scrub techs work in hospitals and are on their feet most of the day. Scrub techs make an annual salary of $43,350 and an hourly wage of $20.81. Surgical technologists require an Associate’s Degree. Due to surgeries becoming safer and safer, more types of surgeries have been developed, therefore more scrub techs are needed. In ten years, statistics provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics show job growth for surgical technologists will increase by fifteen percent. Like a surgical technologist, anesthesiologists spend most of their time working in an operation room. An anesthesiologist is a physician that applies anesthetics into the patient before, during, and after surgery. Anesthetics numb the patient from feeling pain during a perioperative. Perioperative are the three phases while a patient is undergoing surgical operations. Along with anesthetics, an anesthesiologist must monitor blood pressure and heart rate of the patient. The annual salary of an anesthesiologist is $246,320. Anesthesiologist’s job outlook will be expected to grow 18% due to the expansion and enhancement healthcare related industries. Although the pay is substantially high, the amount of work and time required in order to fill this occupation is extreme. After earning a four-year bachelor’s degree, students must take another four-years in order to get a medical degree (M.D) or an osteopathy (D.O). After eight gruesome years of education, students must go another four years of anesthesiology residency. Employments in occupation in California go up to 2,160.
