There are in fact some pros to superstitious behaviors. For example, at the start of a semester if I do well on a test I will use the same pencil for every test after that. I know that I still need to study in order to do well, but still using that same pencil gives me a sense of comfort I cannot explain. Superstitions can range from being harmless to extreme. My pencil example was just a little thing that I did to raise my confidence before an exam, but in other cases people will change up their lives all based on superstitions. The hit television show, Grey’s Anatomy, had a whole episode dedicated to superstitions. The show focuses on the brilliant doctors of Seattle Grace Hospital. The episode opened with showing each doctor acting in their superstitious ways. Dr. Bailey always prays before surgery, Dr. Addison Shepard has to put on a gold safety pin, Dr. Derek Shepard says “it’s a beautiful day to save lives,” and Dr. Burke asks a scrub nurse where his “lucky” scrub cap is. Burke is panicked and worried throughout the whole episode and questions his abilities to preform surgery because he cannot find his certain scrub hat. This is a great example of having extreme superstitious beliefs. We have to decide for ourselves that these beliefs have no real logic or reason and therefore it is not beneficial to believe in them. It may difficult to stop acting with superstitious behavior because these beliefs are such a big part of our everyday lifestyle. At almost every birthday party I have ever been to, we make it a big deal to get a cake and gather around the person having the birthday and sing “happy birthday.” Then they continue to blow out their candle and make a wish. There is no proof or reason to believe their birthday wish is going to come true, but still I just had my 19th birthday and I made a point to make a wish after I blew out my candles. It will take strong self-control to avoid acting on our urge to participate in superstitious beliefs. I can start by not crossing my fingers when hoping for good news and not making a wish every time one of my eyelashes falls out and I put it on my finger then blow it away. Even though I know these superstitions are not based on true evidence, it will be hard to avoid because they have became habits. Now I must focus on breaking these
