Biblical Perspective To Preventing Adolescence

Adolescence is defined as the period of transition between childhood and adulthood, typically this period occurs between the ages of 10 and 20 years (Santrock, 2016, p. 16-17). Many changes occur during this period, including biological, cognitive and socioemotional. While these changes can cause some emotional turbulence for youths, for the most part this transitional period of life typically occurs without any serious disturbances. Most adults, even look back at their adolescence with fondness later in life and view this period of life as being an exciting time of self-exploration and development.
However, for some adolescents this period of life is fraught with depression, anxiety and suicide ideation. There are numerous causes for adolescents

For an adolescent who is feeling the level of despair that can led to suicide ideation this verse can be a powerful message of strength. We are told that we are bought with a high price and are to glorify God with ourselves (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition). God does not want us to end our lives, but wants us to live in a manner that will glorify Him.
For adolescents struggling with depression and suicide ideation it can be difficult for them to remember that their life is not their own, but rather a gift from God. As a Christian seeking to help youth who are in the levels of despair that leads to suicide it is important to remind them of the hope that can be found in the love of Christ. 1 John 4:4 reminds us that, “little children, you are from God, and have conquered them; for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition). Through making adolescents aware of the love that Christ has for them adults assisting adolescents can help rebuild adolescents’ confidence and self-esteem, reducing the risk of

However, for some individuals a combination of changes being experienced, the presentation of mental illness and peer discord can turn an otherwise ordinary period of life into darkness. For adolescents who experience thoughts of despair, depression and isolation during their teen years’ suicide can become a viable option. Fortunately, it is a small population that loses their lives to a preventable death.
For those that experience suicide ideation, there is help available. This is one of the most preventable cause of death in adolescence. Active parental involvement, school resources, and Christian outreaches can all be sources of assistance for adolescents struggling with suicide ideation. For any person struggling with thoughts of despair it is important to remember that they are loved by an almighty God. John 3:16 tells of this love “for God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition). Adolescence does not need to be a time of despair, but can become of a time of self-awareness and growth the help of suicide prevention
