Have you ever thought about how we talk and what causes us to say those words the way we say them? Well a speech pathologist does. Their entire job focuses on how and what causes people to speak the way they do. Most people have no problem with speaking but some do. There are several disorders in speech, one being stuttering. Most people do not understand the importance and the difficulty of learning how to cope with the disorder of stuttering. This speech disorder can affect numerous aspects in a patients’ life and can cause embarrassment, or even possibly lower some people’s self-confidence level; to some people stuttering isn’t just an aspect in their life, their life revolves around the disorder and trying to overcome it. Stuttering has been a disease that has been in history books for years, there is even evidence that Isaac Newton, Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Marilyn Monroe had the disorder (Dahm, pg. 75). There are many different aspects on how to deal with stuttering. Many professionals have different ways or therapies that they would suggest in helping a patient to either minimize or overcome this disorder. The American Speech Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) is a major component when it comes to handling this disorder. This is made up of professionals that deal with speech, language, or hearing such as Speech Pathologist, assistants to the Speech Pathologist, assistants to Audiologist, Audiologist, and numerous of other professionals that deal with speech disorders on a daily basis with a credible history. ASHA explains that pathologist jobs are to help lessen the side effects of stuttering in their patients when it occurs. ASHA has also talked about different facts of some people even growing out of the disorder of stuttering. “Seventy-five percent of children who stutter outgrow the disorder by the time they reach adulthood”(ASHA, pg. 66).
