In the article, “Is Google making us stupid?” Nicholas Carr emphasizes how the internet, and specifically Google, is changing the way our brains think, process, and analyze information. He looks at how new technologies, such as the typewriter and the clock, in the past have affected how our brains have handled change. Google is no different. In recent studies, it has been shown that we can’t take in large portions of reading without our minds getting sidetracked, and Carr argues that Google has had a major influence on this. When was the last time you saw a 18 year old girl without her iPhone next to her? We are rarely seen without our phones next to us. Our brains don’t like feeling disconnected from what is going on in the world, whether in our small social circle or worldwide. Even while driving, we hate to be away from our phones. The Center for Disease control and prevention states: “Each day in the United States, more than 9 people are killed and more than 1,153 people are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver.1 Distracted driving is driving while doing another activity that takes your attention away from driving”("Distracted Driving”). So many motor vehicle deaths were caused by someone being distracted by something while drive, most of that can be related to our cell phones.
