Stranger Than Fiction Analysis

Two ideas are forced upon every single person. Taxes and death. Through the movie Stranger Than Fiction the audience follows Harold Crick, ironically an IRS auditor, who is forced to face his own fate. However, these are only the ideas posed on the screen. The underlying message stressed throughout this movie is the idea that time is precious and should not be taken for granted. A main idea that is presented throughout the entire movie is the idea of challenging oneself. This is evident when Professor Jules Hilbert tells Harold to accept his fate and to live the life he never had. Harold decides to do this through trying out new things. The audience sees Harold Crick finding out that his death is very near and wanting to stop it. When discovering the truth about his upcoming death he begins to panic, but he learns to accept it. This is a powerful message because most do not want life to catch up with them; However, one day it will and this idea can not be stopped. People do not realize that they are running out of time every single day. One should maintain this thought and make the most out of the life they have been given. Throughout his story, he changes for the better. By the end of the movie he becomes a man who lives for himself instead of others. He has hobbies, passions, and relationships which give his life meaning and purpose. This particular character is played by Will Ferrell who was perfect for this role. This is because of his dry humor and his way of being able to be as awkward without making the audience feel awkward. His character development helped the audience to feel sympathy for Harold Crick and his desolate life.
Time is crucial and life should be appreciated. Stranger than Fiction demonstrates a wide persona allowing many who watch to relate. Although the story is far from true, it provides an essential message that all can take something from. Being blessed with life is gift that should be used, drama filled, and unique.
