Hispanic racial stereotypes have been again and again implemented heavily in the media. A popular stereotype found in contemporary films and television is the recurring theme of Latin Americans being illegal aliens. Researchers at Butler University specifically took a look at how Latin American stereotypes are imposed in the media, and exactly how valid these generalizations are when compared to Latin Americans. The studies were composed of researchers comparing eight Latin American subcultures to statistics derived from media analyses that were collected from a span of over forty years. Their results were troubling to say the least. The studies conducted supported claims that the media has been promoting homogeneity instead of diversity, and that several of the prominent stereotypes found in the media were simply erroneous to say the least (Menéndez Alarcón 72-96). Respectively, this research may sway one to believe that the media is influencing its audience in creating a discriminative society. Further research must be done before rash assumptions should be made on this topic, however the research shows conflicting results at best for the media. The masses frequently implement generalizations as it is simply human nature to do so, however one should be mindful to not to apply stereotypes to individuals. Above all one should take into consideration whether or not stereotypes perpetuated in the media are a true reflection of ethnic groups and individuals within these groups. Further research must be conducted before any audacious decisions are made, however if the media is ultimately found at fault for being biased one might also ponder how to adjust the media’s content in attempt to produce a more impartial
