The Six Stages of Critical Thinking What is Critical Thinking? According to Michael Scriven and Richard Paul, “Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing , applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information (Paul, 2007). In the following paragraphs I will go more in-depth of what the different stages of critical thinking are. Then I will describe my current level and why I feel I am at that level. I feel that I am an unreflective thinker because I am unsure of how my thinking is structured. Also, I am unaware of how to improve my thinking. My hope it to gain a better understanding of my thinking process and to improve my critical thinking level. The single most important critical thinking skill to me is being open-minded. I am starting to realize that my thinking process is biased from my culture and upbringing. My goal is to gain the tools and research needed to shape and grow my ways of thinking. With that being said, developing this skill will enhance my personal and professional life. Having an open mind will help me from passing judgment so quickly. When you let go of passing judgements it makes you have a greater ability to love and be loved. Being open minded will give me several perspectives at how to look at things. Open minded people have a higher tolerance level. Hopefully, after reading this article on the six stages of critical thinking, you will begin to have a better perspective on where you stand.
