“The anterior cruciate ligament, also known as the ACL, is the most frequently injured single ligament in athletes” (Ireland, 1999, pg. 150). “In soccer, the maneuver that is common in ACL injuries results from when an athlete decelerates with the tibia in an external rotation and the knee being in a bent form” (Krick, 2001, pg. 2). The ACL injury rate in women’s soccer dominates over men’s soccer. “Overall, the ACL injury rate in women’s soccer was 0.31, which was more than double that of the rate in men’s soccer, being 0.13. Women soccer players are twice as likely to have an ACL injury as a result of contact from another player and three times likely to have an ACL injury as a result of non-contact” (Arendt, 1999, pg. 88). Female soccer players are also susceptible of tearing their ACL in games compared to practices due to the vigorous playing style and competition. “Female soccer players incurred an average of 1.12 injuries in games and 0.09 in practices, while the rates for male soccer players were less, with an average of 0.45 injuries in games and 0.06 in practices” (Ireland, 1999, pg. 88).
ACL injuries are not just limited to soccer, they occur in all sports. The other two sports are basketball and volleyball. In basketball, the maneuver that is common in ACL injuries result from jumping and landing).
The ACL injury rate in women’s collegiate basketball is 0.29 per exposure, which is defined as one thousand athlete’s participation in one game or practice. This rate is four times that of their counterparts, which was 0.07. In the women’s game, the most common way for ACL injuries was no contact, followed by player contact (Arendt, 1999, pg.88).
Non-contact injury in basketball has also been determined to be greater in females than in
