Unequal Distribution of Blame A disastrous and chaotic time period of unconsolable mothers, wives, and children being left without the love of their family members and having to mourn on their deaths, was the result of something that could have been avoided, but was caused by confusion and pride. Europe was an envied nation due to their advance in technology, art, and music. Everything seemed to be going too well for the Europeans, but soon enough, everything changed. Guns, Germs, and Steel Inequality in the world has stemmed from geographic luck. When an area has a stable food supply, it’s people can spend extra time on inventing new things. Some areas have fertile soil, and crops that are nourishing and easy to harvest. However, other places are not so lucky, with dry soil and crops that have little nutritional value. Jared Diamond, an ecologist and anthropologist, has a theory that all inequality in the world started from the idea of “geographic luck”.…

Jared Diamond espouses the view that the “root of inequality” is the geographical location of a country and the resources it possesses. According to Diamond, all societies in the world were equally wealthy at one time in history. Unfortunately, global environmental changes made some parts of the world to experience harsh weather conditions that made traditional hunting and gathering inefficient in providing food for households. Regions that were geographically disadvantaged were unable to access adequate resources and skills for their development. Diamond uses New Guinea, which is a poor country, and the United States, a wealthy nation, for his analysis.…

As we saw previously, the possible explanation behind why some societies advanced more than others lays on two possible theories. The first, developed by Jared Diamond, argues that the environment is the principal agent behind how different societies developed. The second, explained by Lawrence E. Harrison, claims that the differences lie on certain cultural values and attitudes such as people’s sense of community, their ethical system, the exercise of authority and views about education and finances. In Jared Diamond’s argument, climate, geographic location, the abundance of domesticable plants and animals, and mostly sheer environmental luck, catapulted some societies into the path of wealth and condemned others to poverty.…

The anthropologist Jared Diamond uses the theory of geographic determinism to answer why some societies are more materially successful than others, in his book. According to him geographical causes are mainly responsible for societal development and responsible for different human civilizations developed in different ways. Jared Diamond, the author of the book, respond to Yali’s question, “Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo … but we black people had little cargo of our own?”.
