Choose Your Power
Everything in our lives depends on it. The world be a very different place without it. Electricity, the pushing force behind almost every aspect of our lives. It runs through almost everything surrounding you. It powers this technologically advanced society we live in and, because of our need for it we have discovered many different ways of creating it. Electricity can be made in a variety of ways including: Geothermal, Solar, Coal, Petroleum, Natural gas, Biofuel, and Wind Power. All of theses sources have their own each unique implications.
Geothermal energy is one of the most renewable of all of the sources of energy. “Geothermal energy is the heat energy that exists deep inside the Earth. Geothermal energy

One of the issues with solar power is the uncertainty of available light, especially during the night. Because of this, large batteries must be used to trap the power during the day and store it. The initial cost of the system to harness solar power and batteries involved with it are very expensive. This is one of the biggest problems facing widespread use of solar energy.
Likewise coal is a very powerful source of energy.Coal is the biggest source of electric generation in the world. Coal contains huge amounts of potential energy which is released when burned.
“Coal is used for electricity generation, accounting for the consumption of about 87 percent of all coal production, and as a heating fuel in industrial and manufacturing industries, particularly for the production of steel, which accounts for more than half of all coal exported from the United States. Burning coal releases toxins such as mercury, barium, zinc, lead, chromium, arsenic, nickel, ammonia, and hydrochloric acids into the atmosphere”(Hendrickson,

Natural gas is a very abundant source of electricity generation. “Natural gas is currently used in a number of ways. Electricity can be generated with natural gas, and in many countries highly efficient, combined turbine and heat-recovery systems have been developed to produce electricity from both the turbine and a heat and steam generator”(Hendrickson, 2015).Natural gas is a very efficient source of energy. Primarily used to create heat it can also be utilized to create electricity. The large abundance of natural gas makes it a very useable and attainable source of energy.
Like solar and wind power biofuel is another renewable source of energy. It can also be used to generate electricity.
“Biofuel may be used to produce heat, power, or both. It may be used without processing or improved by drying, grinding, or pressing to make it more energy dense. While wood is the most commonly used biofuel, other types of biofuel include algae, food, plants, agricultural and forest residue, and some municipal and industrial wastes such as methane, which is a fume from the decomposition of matter in landfills”(Campbell, 2015).
Biofuel is used primarily for a heat source. However it can also be turned into methane a gas which can be used to create electricity. Biofuel is a very renewable source of energy because it has no byproducts that are harmful to the

Ethanol is a renewable fuel with a complete cycle making it reusable. Since the production of ethanol is plant material the glucose inside the plant is synthesised from CO2 and water by photosynthesis, yeast fermentation generates ethanol from glucose (ehow.com). Ethanol is then used as an energy source and combusted which then produced CO2 and water completing the cycle with plants converting the CO2 and water back to glucose (ehow.com). With this cycle making ethanol renewable makes it a good alternative fuel to fossil fuels which are not…

Biofuels and bioenergy are as old as civilization itself. Solid biofuels, such as wood, animal waste, and charcoal have been used since man discovered fire, and they are still used today for cooking and heating in many communities and in developing countries. Liquid biofuels such as olive oil and whale oil have been used in the ancient past. From the mid 1700s to the early 1800s, whale oil was extensively used and was the fuel of choice for lighting houses. In this time period, whaling was a big business and whale populations greatly decline.…

Hydro-power plants capture kinetic energy as moving water turns the turbines. Generators are then introduced to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Dams are built to harvest hydroelectricity but they can cause back up of water and flood land upstream or cause droughts downstream. Biomass energy is the conversion of biological materials and wastes into energy sources (Rinkesh). By burning materials such as wood, plants, and carbon based waste they are kept out of landfills.…

By virtue of this, the need for alternative energy sources continues to grow at the same or even a greater rate than that with which primitive energy sources never cease to shrink under the pressure of human consumption. The most popular renewable energy sources are as follows: solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydroelectric energy. All of which, in addition to being overwhelmingly abundant and totally renewable, have very little carbon emissions, thus satisfying both of the concerns involved with oil, gas, or coal ("Alternative…

Is Biomass a better source of energy than Geothermal for meeting Canada’s energy needs in the 21st century? Biomass is biological material obtained from living or recently living (dead) plant or animal matter such as trees or waste that can be processed into fuel and heat. While geothermal energy is produced by obtaining the heat from the earth’s core but currently has no developed sites in Canada. We believe that biomass is a better energy source than geothermal power for meeting Canada’s demand in the 21st century.…

The Conversion of Coal: Joshua Betthauser In the Beginning: The conversion of coal is a lengthy process which begins hundreds of millions of years ago, as a natural resource under the dirt, known as “peat”, than, over time and under pressure, it’s converted into “lignite”. Then, very many millennia later, it is transformed into “bituminous”, then into “anthracite”, the coal we know and love. www.minersmuseum.com/history-of-mining/coal-formation/…

Thesis: Our energy comes predominantly from fossil fuels because of it’s supposed inexpensiveness. However, the cost of fossil fuels in terms of human lives is often ignored. Nuclear power, on the other hand, is a much safer alternative because it results in fewer deaths per unit of energy produced than coal and natural gas. By comparing their outputs in terms of energy produced per unit of fuel consumed, and comparing that with the amount of byproducts produced as well as the amount of deaths associated with both energy sources we can analyse their relative harmfulness.…
