Reflective Essay: Fitting In Tweecht

Great Essays
It seemed as if I knew what I was getting myself into before coming to Lehigh, and the idea of fitting in did not concern me at all. After spending time around my future classmates before classes began, I started to think that I was wrong about fitting in. I come from a very different background compared to the majority of the students that attend Lehigh. I have found very few people who truly relate to me and have the same interests as me, which has turned into a potential folk group. This folk group bonds over criticizing Lehigh for its culture and atmosphere as well as other things that Lehigh tries to force on students in order to conform to one standard. Our folk group likes hanging out without anyone bringing up that they want to go out and party like the rest of the Lehigh community tends to do. I guess it is fair to say that we are “anti-Greek Life” because we would rather not be associated with certain people in fraternities and sororities. “That frat that hangs out with her …show more content…
I can 't rush it because I don 't wanna die.” The silliness that comes with rushing a fraternity includes pushing one’s limits to the extreme, all to enter a stupid frat. Ryan wants to start talking to this girl who is going to be in a sorority, so the only way it seems he can do it is if he attempts to join a fraternity. We joke about this girl he likes and gave her a nickname that only the group knows. Since she is from Connecticut, we call her “Nutmegger” since Connecticut is the Nutmeg State. She has no idea she has been given that nickname so we can speak in code whenever we are around her. We laugh when she follows the typical stereotype sorority girl demeanor and thinks she is superior, and we will refer to hopeful sorority girls as “another future Nutmegger.” But Greek Life divides the campus between those who are in it and those who are not, which alienates us as a group most of the

“It’s not what it looks like”, this is what the majority of members of a sorority or fraternity would respond after being asked about Greek life. Why is that they feel like they have to say that? One word: Marketing. The way sororities and fraternities are portrayed to the public gives off a bad image and reputation about the members and their community. Any person who has not been part of Greek life and does not have any information about this community and its activities they would think sororities and fraternities are just a big house full of college people just having fun, drinking, and sleeping around.…

Goals are something that I have always thought about in my life. Whether it be graduating high school, passing a test, or going to college. Back then I had a lot of simple goals that were easy to accomplish, but now it’s time to start making those goals much bigger. As for my first goal I would like to graduate college with no complications. To do this I will have to always stay on task, turn work in when it is due, and taking care of things before it’s too late.…

Before we step into the real world of college, we hear about all the different sororities and fraternities, what goes on, what they act like, and what they do. We all have seem to have our different views of what “Greek life” really is, but have we really observed the people and the things they do? Despite the ongoing stereotypes we hear about Greek Life on college campuses, being involved here at UCM seems to be very beneficial for not only the students, but the community too. Yes, there are true and false stereotypes for the different sororities or fraternities here at UCM, but if you take a look at what Greek life does around campus, you are able to see the different values they uphold and how they interact with everyone on campus. One of the most popular stereotypes you hear about Greek Life on campus is that, everyone in them is not in college for the education, they are just here to have a good time.…

I am not one to brag. I have no reason to. Bragging is, in my opinion, a selfish way to assert oneself and make oneself seem better than another. There is really no point, and it almost never leads to another person respecting you. People gain respect through their actions and through their experience, not through what they say about themselves.…

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

I am a Student Paramedic with the East Of England Ambulance NHS Trust and this essay will look reflectively at an incident I attended during the course of my duties. The assignment will reflect on the moral, ethical and legal aspects of pre-hospital care that challenged me during this particular emergency. Reflective practice is a requirement of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC, 2014). Rolfe, Freshwater and Jasper (2001) state, “we learn by doing and realising what came of what we did”.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

My experiences with writing have been somewhat limited until I signed up for English 101. I have to admit that English was not my favorite subject in school. I never felt like I was any good at writing, and spelling is still not my strong suit. I always felt like I was better at math. My attitude towards writing was my biggest hindrance to my success.…

In the memoir, the “Reading Like A Writer,” activity helped tremendously. The imaging exercises we performed in the class went a long way to brainstorming an idea about what to write about. Choosing a part was hard, but when I started, the story came out smoothly. I can now imagine myself in the audience’s shoes while reading a paper. The compare/contrast essay was a little difficult because I didn’t know what to write about.…

Writing has been my talent since grade school; I couldn’t sing, or dance but I could write, or so I thought. Then, I entered high school and realized that writing required a lot more than it did in middle school. The brisk pace and advanced comprehension skills required for my English three AP course caused my grades to suffer. I have struggled with college level essay writing tremendously, but through hard-work I have been able to write with more ease and finesse than ever before.…

    Keisha Blake's Identity

    • 1132 Words

Keisha Blake initially changes her name to fit into a university that lacks diversity, which portrays her discomfort with her own racial heritage in comparison to her college peers. She at first justifies her name change as a trial due to the claim that “university is a time of experimentation and metamorphosis” (238). University certainly is a time for change, especially since it is a major leap of independence in which students have more control of their life paths. However, Keisha Blake’s gentrified environment automatically makes her name change a question of race. Zadie Smith claims that “it was not that Mrs. Blake hadn’t noticed the white people walking around with the climbing equipment, or the white people huddled in stairwells discussing the best method to chain themselves to an oak tree… but she had thought it was more of an aesthetic than a protest” (239).…

It has always terrified me because I have difficulty putting my thoughts down on paper. This course has proven to be highly inspiring to me as well as frightening. It has really taught me more about the understanding of the writing process and structure, in which helped me to not focus so much on the actual writing parts.…
