Psychopathy vs. Sociopathy
The words Psychopathy and Sociapathy are used interchangeably to describe a disorder in which a person suffers from a list of incurable mental and emotional characteristics. Many believe both words pertain to the same disorder, and some believe that the two are entirely different. Countless interviews with doctors and diagnosed psychopaths and sociopaths have only succeeded in making the question of whether there is a difference between the two even more of a mystery. There are more than enough theories of their apparent difference, but no substantial evidence. The term psychopath is interpreted in many ways by ordinary people, and most everyone 's idea of a psychopath is faulty. Psychopaths aren 't just the serial killers and bank robbers on television. They exist in the world and mingle almost inconspicuously with the likes of normal people. Today 's society has psychopaths dubbed as the crazy people running the streets when in most cases, that is far from the truth. The actual characteristics of a psychopath allow them to blend into many situations, and make life overall easier according to many psychopaths. It is sociopaths that tend to act more impulsively and cause havoc. Most psychopaths are able to live inconspicuously in society, but that does not mean that there aren 't a large number of imprisoned psychopaths and sociopaths. In 2013, it was said that psychopaths make up from 20 to 30% of the imprisoned population, and it was shown that they were more likely to be involved in violent crimes and were also more likely to have repeated transgressions than people not afflicted with the these disorders. With that being said, psychopathic and sociopathic behavior has a wide a range as other mental conditions. 20. Criminal versatility Dr. Hervey M. Checkley is also responsible for how psychopaths are identified. Through the use of his book, The Mask of Sanity, Checkley recalled his countless interviews with psychopaths. He created his own list of 16 symptoms that he observed from his encounters. His checklist of symptoms strongly mirrors Hare 's and includes many of the same identifying factors. This checklist consists of an overview of symptoms that help identify a psychopath. This does not mean that one must meet every requirement, but one must have many if not most of them. Notice how none of these symptoms include murderous tendencies or thievery as a requirement. What people hear of psychopaths are cases in which symptoms such as impulsivity and criminal versatility have been carried out in the extreme.
