Richard & Lockhart (1994) suggests that the teacher should do something to engage the students what was evidenced in the observed class. The Educator opened the lesson asking two questions in Spanish “¿a quién le gustan los animales?” and “¿quién tiene animales en la casa?” what allow the students to activate their prior knowledge regarding the animals.…

This English 101 class has helped me in variety of ways in gaining and shaping skills in writing. I learned how do compose several types of essays including: professional, informal, casual, cause and effect, and argumentative and was given the format for writing these. Every week, the class was given one of these types of essay to write and throughout the class periods, I would start and finish them. I saw that if I outline these essays with key points of my topic before I officially being writing the first draft, an essay is not difficult to come up with. I would only have to include transitions, which I also learned, and maybe a few more sentences to make my ideas connect properly and flow smoothly.…

Prior to taking ENL 110, I was concerned if I would be able to handle a college writing course. Growing up in the inner-city it was difficult to learn the basic foundations of writing such as grammar and punctuation. As an avid reader, I have had only my ears to rely on to make the appropriate corrections and build sentences. I stepped into the course afraid to write papers, but I was hungry to learn my weaknesses and strengths. This portfolio is a reflection of the progress I have made since I started this course to the brutal end.…

I have absolutely loved English 101 this semester—and I am not just saying that to make you feel good. In one semester alone I can confidently say I have learned more than I have in any other English class. But what made this class so special to me was that I learned more than just grammar and rhetoric—I learned new ways of thinking. Throughout my education career I have rarely been asked to consider two sides of a situation. The idea of having an opinion and portraying it clearly to others was drilled into me in high school; but my opinion is only half of what matters.…

In an English classroom- full of non-native speakers, being the only person along with a Lebanese American girl was dissimilar to a normal English class at high school. While sitting in a cold chair, my hands were sweating and shaking as the teacher instructed us heavy assignments that would overthink my brain out. On the blackish table, pencil scribbling and eraser marks are left on the worksheet. As I grasp to defeat my past middle school/elementary illiteracy, nothing really modify during 12+ years in the ELL program. However, there were crucial topics that were covered from the ELL classes- such as advanced vocabulary, reading out loud , and the most important of all is learning to write a high school essay.…

Since middle school, I have always enjoyed writing and English class. It has always been a way for me to reflect on a lot of my readings or life in general through essays. During my observation of an ESL push-in classroom, I have come across with many pedagogical issues and concerns that were brought in the Methods of Teaching class. Such topics include the use of cooperative Learning, classroom setting, adapting lesson plan and differentiated instructions by incorporating visuals, hands-on activities, simulations of real life situations etc so that students can nurture their skills academically, linguistically, socially as well as emotionally. The purpose of this report is to focus solely on the two major components of teaching-learning environment, and the components are relatively described as the classroom environment and the participation of students in relation with what I have learned in this class. When I entered the classroom, the first thing fascinated me was that all the four word walls were well labeled in both the languages(English and Spanish) with appropriate pictures. The setting of the room was safely configured, and convenient as well as appealing to the kids.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…
