Many people discuss if new social media has caused problems with today’s youth in society. Many teens spend an excessive amount on social media every day. They also increase the time they spend on social media sites. Social media has caused many problems in society with teens and has led to many dangerous extremes. Social media causes a tremendous amount of issues with online bullying. It also impacts youth with face-to-face interaction and decreases their social skills. Lastly, it advertises and persuades young children in many ways that may be harmful to their health and even their lifestyle. All of these problems happen on a day to day basis in society and have caused a significant amount of issues in homes, schools and other places …show more content…
Teens today have significantly poor social skills that are decreasing with more use of online social media. Teens would rather sit at home and be on Facebook or Twitter rather than actually interacting with their friends. Teens spend an excessive amount of time on these social media sites and cut themselves out of real life society. Teens need to learn to how to properly use these sites or spend less time on them because an extensive amount on these sites may causes disorders and bad habits. In the online article Social Networking Is Addictive and Can Lead to Psychological Disorders, it states, “Internet and social media addiction can be a serious problem. The need to continually play games, use a smart phone, or use social media can lead to sleep deprivation and can damage real-life relationships with coworkers, friends, or family. Research suggests that Internet addiction may be linked to changes in brain chemistry associated with the rewards of Internet use. However, addiction is also likely linked to social and psychological rewards associated with Internet and social media use (2015).” If social networking causes problems with relationships amongst people then why is the use of social media still increasing? These advertisements may put teens in situations that could be harmful to them or even their families. For example, tobacco products are advertised all over the internet and teens everywhere fall into the persuasion of these advertisements. They may think smoking is cool because of what they have seen or read on social media. They may get the impression that you fit into society better if you smoke. Alcohol is another product that is commonly advertised that persuades teens into the lifestyle of partying and trying to impress their friends. How is social media safe for teens if it displays many harmful substances and addictive lifestyles? If these sites advertise all of these impurities online then the sites are just as bad. Sites also have advertisements that will get teens to spend their money. Money that students could be saving for college or a car are often times spent on items the teen sees advertisements on or posts that people put online. This may entice them to purchase harmful products. The problem is that these teens do not even know they are being persuaded each day on social media. They get on these sites and fall right into the trap of considering harmful or addictive
