Smoker Vs. Nonsmoker: A Case Study

Discrimination of an employee, protection of the company and its money or both seem to tie together the notion of an employer being able to hire or not based upon a personal preference. Smoking areas or smoke free environment remains to be the question in workplaces, business have considered the cost and effects of smokers versus nonsmoker. Should an employer have say in what one does in my free time? Are my healthcare benefits being paid more by me or the company I work for? And breaks smoking or not are mine to do with them! These statements and questions will all be touched upon including how smoking effects employment, productivity, and health issues associates with smoking.
Cost the same?
When looking at heath care many factors are included into the cost. Health histories both personal and family are accounted for. If you’re a smoker healthcare cost versus a nonsmoker rates are different with a higher rate of 15-20% for the smoker. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) attributes smoking to productivity loss and medical expenditures to the amount of $3,400 per year for each adult smoker. That $3,400 does not factor in cost by smokers themselves, taxpayers, or insurance companies. In the paper “Estimating the cost of a smoking employee”, it breaks down the numbers from a private employer’s perspective for both smokers and nonsmokers.
