Once Helen Keller said, “Darkness would make him appreciate sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound”. Elliot displays what Helen Keller says in her book Silas Marner. The character Silas goes through some struggles and gets abandon by close friends and so to be relatives. Silas then is forced to leave town and ends up in a town named Ravelo. In Ravelo, Silas dwells for 15 years with no exchange to anyone except for trade. Silas goes “blind” for 15 years of his life. Once was a gushing stream of love and hope. Has shrunk into a rivulet that “disappears into the barren sand”. Silas Marner, the rivulet demonstrates how Silas diminishes himself and his relationship with society until Eppie helps reconnect Silas to his memories and to his …show more content…
In the first 15 years of Ravelo, the only companion that Silas has is with his money. Silas earned his money by walking into town and silently making trades with his neighbors that he did not know. Silas’s “steps never wandered to the hedge-bank and the lane-side in search of once familiar herbs: these too belonged to the past” (16). Silas tries to forget about the “once familiar herbs” because as tasteful and sweet they can be the herbs can be bitter and tart. The bitter herbs started to grow through backstabs and betrayals of friends and his betrothed. By “never wandering to the hedge-bank” the bitter herbs are never touched. Silas keeps himself extremely busy so he does not have time to wander. While Silas is never wandering he tries to exterminate the not satisfying herbs. Silas keeps himself so far from the “hedge-bank and the lane side” that beautiful flowers that grow beside the herbs are …show more content…
When Silas is basking in his gold his life shrinks away. “His life had shrunken away, like a rivulet that has sunk far down from the grassy fringe of its old breath into a little shivering thread, that cuts a groove for itself in the barren Sand”(16). Silas’s life has backed away from reality and created a word of its own. This world that centered God now has centered work. This new world blocks out his past. This creates Silas’s new world barren and like a desert where all you can see is sand for

Across the entirety of Passage Two, Austen explores the defilement of social intercourse through the characterisation of the gauche Mrs. Elton. The ironic certainty of Mrs. Elton’s appraisal of Maple Grove’s alleged beauty in “yes, I am quite aware of that” elucidates the overbearing nature of her persona; unlike the gentle Emma’s consideration for Mr Woodhouse in the third passage, Mrs. Elton is seen by the reader as aggressive in enforcing her beliefs upon the greater world around her, a behaviour clearly constructed by Austen as comical and incongruent with the expectations of gentility within 19th century society. Repetitious allusions to “the Maple Grove” and “The laurels at Maple Grove” furthermore signify the socially distortive…

“When love is involved no sacrifice is too great” (David Eddings). This suggests that it is more honorable to die with people knowing the truth rather living with a lie. Incomplete: So far I have read that Romeo loved Rosaline, he kissed Juliet and they fell in love, they got married secretly, Tybalt killed Mercutio, Romeo killed Tybalt, Romeo was banished, and Juliet took a potion so she would appear dead and not have to marry Paris. I think a lot of people of many ages would enjoy Romeo and Juliet because it involves drama and romance. It is really interesting to already know what happens in the end but not know exactly how it happens. I would say this book is very hard because the old language they use is hard to understand, but we get a translation which makes it much easier.…

The short story “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne is filled with many layers of symbolism that include both characters, such a Faith, and objects, such as the staffs. These symbols are used in various events to create a structure for deeper meaning in the novel. Such events include Young Goodman Brown’s constant turning back towards his wife and his acceptance of the staff. The final culmination of these events is a moral theme that accounts for both the literal and symbolic angles that the story is told from. The moral of “Young Goodman Brown,” illustrated through symbolism, is that sinfulness is inherently intertwined with human nature and the more anyone concerns themselves with it the more havoc it wreaks on their life.…

Nothing in life is set in stone and nothing in life is ever promised. Life has its twists and turns, its ups and downs, and its struggle it makes people go through. In the case of Truman Capote 's true crime novel In Cold Blood, life throws a curve-ball at the seemingly tranquil, open community of Holcomb, Kansas where the murders of the Clutter family disrupts the fictitious portrayal of the town. In three distinctive parts of the novel-Part I, Part II, Part II-Capote transitions from the once amicable Holcomb to a malicious, nefarious town with equally narcissistic citizens. Capote use of a variety of rhetorical devices illustrates the tone shift within the community in response to the gruesome murders.…
