Chapter 1, page 4 of How to Read Literature Like a Professor is a prime example of what a quest consists of. From this page it is learned that every quester has to have a place to go and a stated reason to go. For our hero Beowulf, the destination for his quest is a lake that is not far from the Heorot hall that Grendel terrorized and his reason to go is to slay the mother of Grendel, who is set to avenge her son’s gruesome injury. After Beowulf defeats Grendel, he begins a trek to a certain lake miles away from the Heorot hall, where he faces the beast that is Grendel’s mother. Once she is defeated, he is rewarded with numerous riches from King Hrothgar. To sum it all up, yet another example of Beowulf being the average hero on a quest is the notion that the hero has to have a location to go to and a reason to embark upon the
