However in the days of the revolutionary war this threat was all too real. In fact, in 1792 a federal law approved by President George Washington, required every able body man own a gun and ammunition suitable for military service. A responsible, well armed, and well trained group of citizens is the best defense against the threat of foreign invasion, and domestic crime. During an interview in 2012, a counsel member in the NRA stated, "It is evident that the framers of the Constitution did not intend to limit the right to keep and bear arms to a formal military body or organized militia, but intended to provide for an 'unorganized ' armed citizenry prepared to assist in the common defense against a foreign invader or a domestic tyrant.”(Zornick) Like i said in the beginning of this paragraph, this is not a threat people in the US are accustomed to because it really has not happened since the civil war. In regards to the 62 mass shootings in the United States from 1982 to 2012, 49 of the gunman used firearms that were obtained through illegal measures. In total “…143 guns were possessed by the killers, and about 75% of [these weeapons] were obtained legally.”(Metzle) The reason gun control laws are harmful, is they take away guns from law abiding citizens, while would be criminals ignore the laws!
