Why Americans Should Be Allowed to Own Firearms The first firearms were invented in early 13th century China, when the portable, one person fire lance was combined with an explosive of some type, and projectiles. This new technology spread throughout the rest of Asia, the Middle East and then into Europe. Typically, in older firearms, the propellant was black powder, which is the earliest known stable chemically explosive. Modern firearms usually use a smokeless powder. Today firearms are not uncommon in the american household. One study found “…about a third of Americans have at least one.”(Haynes). Some people believe that guns should be outlawed completely in the United States. There are many reasons why I strongly disagree with this.

However in the days of the revolutionary war this threat was all too real. In fact, in 1792 a federal law approved by President George Washington, required every able body man own a gun and ammunition suitable for military service. A responsible, well armed, and well trained group of citizens is the best defense against the threat of foreign invasion, and domestic crime. During an interview in 2012, a counsel member in the NRA stated, "It is evident that the framers of the Constitution did not intend to limit the right to keep and bear arms to a formal military body or organized militia, but intended to provide for an 'unorganized ' armed citizenry prepared to assist in the common defense against a foreign invader or a domestic tyrant.”(Zornick) Like i said in the beginning of this paragraph, this is not a threat people in the US are accustomed to because it really has not happened since the civil war. In regards to the 62 mass shootings in the United States from 1982 to 2012, 49 of the gunman used firearms that were obtained through illegal measures. In total “…143 guns were possessed by the killers, and about 75% of [these weeapons] were obtained legally.”(Metzle) The reason gun control laws are harmful, is they take away guns from law abiding citizens, while would be criminals ignore the laws! In may of 2013, a report from the Bureau of Justice found that “…37.4% of state prison inmates who ‘used, carried, or possessed a firearm when they committed the crime for which they were serving a prison sentence’ obtained the gun from a family member or friend.”(Metzle) Although Chicago placed a gun shops, assault weapons and shooting ranges, in 2014 they experienced a total of 2,089 reported shooting victims. While weapons such as a javelin rocket launcher (FGM-148 Javelin), and other military grade weapons equally as devastating, should not be available to the general public, bans on firearms only hurt those trying to protect themselves and their
