There are many contradicting views on marriage, about whether it’s necessary or not. Personally, I think that marriage, although it isn’t necessary, is romantic and symbolises that a relationship is strong, thought I recognise that in some cases, that’s not true. At the same time, I don’t think that it’s mandatory for people to get married, because our society today is ever changing, so even though it was the norm 20 years ago, it’s more widely accepted to live alone or to start a family without marriage today than ever before.

The sheer numbers of risks that come with forced marriage are over whelming. Backgrounds of partners are not often checked thoroughly, because the marriage is not for love, but for other reasons, so many forced marriages can lead to abuse or emotional harm. As well as this, forcing a young person to get married is denying them the experience of falling in love themselves, to get an education and to lead a life of their choice. Similarly, many people forced into marriage, often women, are forced to become parents and take care of children full time, or become carers for their partner if the partner is elderly or disabled, and although this benefits the person on the receiving end of the care, the giver of the care’s life can be ruined because of the responsibilities now on their shoulders. Approximately 118,140 couples got divorced in 2012, which is more than the last 2 years, showing that the number of divorces is increasing. As well as this, not only the partners are affected in divorce- children whose parents divorced often demonstrate anti-social behaviour, drug and alcohol abuse and behavioural issues, and in one study, out of the divorced parent’s children asked, 65% of GCSE age children said that their parents split ting harmed their results, and 44% of A level age children their levels had suffered.
