Riley reached across the steering wheel to answer.

“Hello,” he answered.

“Hi darling,” replied a warm female voice. A great grin broke out on Riley’s face at the sound of his beloved’s voice.

“Just checking to see how far away you are,” she said.

“I’m about 15 kilometers away, and counting down the minutes till I see your beautiful face.”

“Ok, I’ll wait up for you. I love you,” she said softly.

“I love you too,” Riley replied gently.

As he pressed the button to hang up and dropped the phone on the passenger seat, he accelerated on the pedal slightly, in his excitement to get home.



The sound of the puppy beginning to whimper in the back of the car alerted Riley.

“Shh, shh, its alright, we’re nearly there,” he crooned. “We’ll be home soon.” Still, the puppy was not comforted. Riley attempted to steal a glance in the back to try and discover what was wrong. Turning his head for a split second, he only caught a glimpse of what appeared to be fine. As far as he could tell, the pup was secure and surrounded by enough blankets that he’d be cushioned if he got hit by a train. Despite this, the pup kept whimpering. Riley braced himself against the seat, preparing himself for a longer glance. Just as he turned around, the car jolted over a pot hole, disrupting Riley’s balance and causing his hand to slip from the wheel.
