Shame Shame is a set of unwritten rules that society uses to control people in that it creates positive behavior. The reason society needs control is to keep the peace and not have chaos erupt among everyone. There are two outcomes of shame either motivation or destruction in someone’s life. How it affects the individual is determined by which path they are going to take with their shame. Someone being shamed needs to take that shame and turn it into motivation, so they can better themselves. Once someone is motivated to be their best self, then they will be happy with who they are. Today different types of shaming happen constantly in our society such as body shaming, gender shaming, and poor shaming. The only way to overcome these is to …show more content…
Women throughout history have been unable to vote, own property, wear certain clothing, and many more privileges we have today. When incidents like this happen, a woman can either let the shame destroy her, or let the shame motivate her. In the workplace men and women are stereotyped when trying to get a job. A study done by Cornell University showed that “men and women are surveyed differently” (Christine). When an employer looks to hire someone, for men the employer looks for assertiveness and for women the employer looks for self-modest. If a man or a woman does not fit this mold, then their chances of getting the job are very slim. This could lead to not having enough money to provide for themselves causing them to be financially unstable. On the other hand, women such as Susan B. Anthony decided she was not going to let the shame of being a woman in the 1800’s destroy her but instead let it motivate her. One of Susan B. Anthony’s greatest accomplishments was forming National Woman Suffrage Association, which fought for women’s equality. If she would have let the shame of being a woman bring her down she would have never accomplished an important part of U.S history. If you are brought into a world where, before you are even born, you are told that you won’t succeed life is a struggle. Society tells you you can’t do it, you aren’t good enough, or you are worthless. This is how women are viewed. In America we are very lucky that this is a much smaller issue than in some countries such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan, but it is still an issue in our home too. Women are still not paid as much as men, they are expected to stay at home with the children, and they are constantly being sexualized.…

The author of this essay argues that public shaming can make people regret their actions and even become a good person. Because nobody likes to be publicly humiliated, people who committed a crime would change their bad behavior. However, this idea is not applied on the real world. The majority of criminals find some other people to be blamed for their mistakes. Therefore, making people feel shameful does not solve the issue because the guilty person keeps making excuses to not feel guilty about them breaking the law.…

Racism is one topic which is very sensitive and hard to deal with. Many people don’t like talking about it because they fear what other people might think about them. Although many people think that racism is not there, this is not true, racism is still and will still be there, it’s only how people do it that changes, on the foreground a person will condemn it but in background they are the real culprits. From the reading “Assigning value to difference”, the author describes it as, “generalized and final assigning value to real or imaginary differences”. This goes to show that as long as differences do exist, racism will still be there, unless people put their differences aside and see each other as being same, nothing will help the situation.…

    1. Summary of Issue As a woman, I was drawn to digging deeper into the models of women’s development, focusing on Gilligan, Bem, and Shame Resilience Theory. While looking at this section, I found myself comparing what I was reading to the issue of equal pay for men and women. A question was asked, "When is it ok to public shame a child?" In my opinion, depending on what the crime or misbehavior was, it is acceptable. If a child were to make a bad grade or wet their pants, something of that nature, I believe that public shaming is totally unacceptable. Now if a child were to commit a heinous crime or bully another person, i find public shaming appropriate for the situation. Same for adults.…

There has always been a big debate about public shaming. It has been a form of punishment used in the United States for many years. Public shaming is a punishment used on criminals, it is humiliating someone in public rather than sending them to jail. Throughout Tagney’s article she is trying to prove that public shaming would be a good alternative to incarcerations. While she made some very favorable points for public shaming, it would be very challenging to get people, judges, and the court to change the system.…

Historically, women have had a disadvantage compared to their male peers. Until the 1920s, women did not wear pants, nor could they vote. Society has come far since then, women can now practically do anything a man can (vote, own land, join the army, make decisions), however, they are still believed to be inferior. To state this in similar terms, look at sports. Women don’t play football, and those sport that have female leagues, do not get close to the amount of attention as similar male sports do (Basketball, Softball).…

Public shaming has been around for thousands of years and has a been a tremendous part of human history. In The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester Prynne has committed adultery and is forced to wear the letter “A” on her chest for all of eternity. Public shaming, similar to what Hester was sentenced to, still happens today consequently making public shaming an alternative punishment. However, public shaming should not be apart of the judges repertoire as it affects the criminals way more than intended. Having the government and legal system come up with the punishment is pushing the boundaries on the Eighth Amendment and privacy.…
