A cause of his inability to make a commitment is his radical belief in God. An example that made him question two paths based on his belief is questioning whether or not he should commit suicide. Claudius is named King and marries the wife of Old Hamlet, Gertrude, within a month of his death. In this case with Hamlet, his inability to act upon his vows leads to negative consequences. Because he does not act to kill Claudius as swiftly as he mentioned to the ghost of his father, other people whom he loves dies in place of him. For example, Ophelia is a young noblewoman from Denmark and is the daughter of the most trusted advisor, Polonius. She is also the potential wife for Prince Hamlet as the two of them spend most of their free time together. Hamlet with all his madness and inability to choose a specific time to kill the King, ends up killing Polonius after having a heated conversation with his mother. At the graveyard where Ophelia is buried, Laertes and the Gertrude solemnly follow her coffin. In the midst of the trees, Hamlet finds out who is in the coffin, and angrily, he shouts to Laertes saying, “I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers / Could not with all their quantity of love / Make up my sum” (5.1.285-287). Ultimately, after choosing not to kill Claudius the one chance he got, other people such as both Polonius and Ophelia died instead.
