The book starts with the introduction to the main character. He is a skillful, honest and handsome young man who is admired by most of the people he knew and takes good care of his father, old Dantes. Old Dantes is an old man that truly loves his son and prevents any burden on him and the people around him. In the later part of the story, old Dantes dies due to starvation. Before old Dantes’ death, he was taken care of by Mercedes and M. Morrel, in which at the same time Caderousse, Edmund’s and his father’s neighbor, only witnessed the happenings without helping. Mercedes is a beautiful Catalan woman that was supposed to marry Dantes, but due to his imprisonment, the wedding was cancelled. At a later part of the story, Mercedes becomes Fernand’s wife. M. Morrel is the owner of the ship in which Edmund had worked in. In the later part of the story, it would be mentioned that M. Morrel has a son named Maximillian Morrel, a son-in-law named Emmanuel Herbault and a daughter name Julie Herbault. Fernand Mondego is a strong and courageous young man that envies the love Mercedes has for Edmund. He and Danglars frames Edmund and puts him into prison in which at those period, Fenrnand and Danglars were positioned to a high rank in the society. Fernand had his last name changed to “de Morcerf”. Fernand’s child’s name is Albert de Morcerf from Mercedes. Edmund Dantes was naïve and became hopeless when he was imprisoned. As days went by, he’d think of death as an answer but then he meets his fellow prisoner. Abbe Faria had taught him many things in which changes Edmund’s personality and perspective. On the other hand he was also able to escape from prison. He had another chance to begin life once more but he had to do some duties first before he enjoys his freedom. For me, I could say I could relate to Edmund’s situation. I would think of situations in which I find impossible to do, but then someone would push me through it. I become inspired and try to achieve the goal I want. For me, this book wanted to make readers feel about hope. It doesn’t come to you immediately; you would have to find
