One health area that is usually ignored is sexual health. Most people and studies often focus on physical, mental or spiritual health but forget to take into account sexual health. This is especially true for young adults, a population that has been affected the hardest by an increase in STD diagnosis. STDs or Sexually transmitted diseases are infections that are passed from one person to another during sexual behaviors. Gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis and HIV are among the most commonly diagnosed STDs in the country. Discussing sexual health in schools and our communities is considered controversial therefore most schools have taken the stance of promoting abstinence. Abstinence only programs are programs that are intended to discourage teens fro engaging in any kind of sexual activity before marriage. Given the fact that the average age for sexual debut is 17 (finer and philbin), abstinence only programs are not working and teenagers are continuing to engage in sexual behaviors. The popularity of these kinds of applications and websites, which make it easy for people to find sexual partners with the same interest but without any kind of commitment, has contributed to the growing rate of STDs diagnosis among young adults. According to an article by CNN, In Rhode Island, the department of health states that hookup apps such as Tinder may be to blame for a spike in STDs there. The number of syphilis infections in the state jumped 71 percent from 2013-2014. Gonorrhea cases increased by 30 percent. When people meet online, using social media or dating apps, they know little about the person they are connecting with, sometimes not even knowing the other person’s real name. To some, that sense of anonymity is what attracts them to using such sites. However, having sex with someone without knowing their previous sexual history puts one at risk for contracting STDs.
