Sex trafficking has become an international crisis over the years, defined as “ the recruitment,harboring, transportation,providing, or obtaining a person for a commercial sex act”. Despite the world’s cry in outrage over these horrendous atrocities, the United States has been ineffective in defending their borders from this modern day slavery.The trafficking of women and under aged children have resulted in an average of 50,000 women primarily from Latin America, former Soviet countries, and Southeast Asia. Many victims who are forced into trafficking are manipulated, exploited and vulnerable, due to the incapability of dealing with family, social, or economic problems. The image of women, primarily Asian or Eastern European, being shipped, literally, on cargo ships tend to come into mind. Though, those images are possible and plausible. They’re other means of bringing women into this country to become sex slaves. They are the known “business” ventures that certain gangs, mafia, and brothels portray. While on the other hand, some servicemen would also part-take in this field.They would do this by conducting a sham marriage. This is for the recruiter to marry the women on a military base, whether abroad or in the United States, then forcing her to take part of this nightmare. In addition, predators are preying on women through social media outlets, throughout the neighborhoods, clubs, and other various means. Then give false promises of protection, love, adventure, and opportunity. According to the United States department of Justice, 80% of persons who were trafficked were women. While 70% of those women were placed in the sex industry within the United States. To continue with the report, majority of the women were from Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands ( 5-7,000) then to be followed by Latin America and Eastern Europe (3,500-5,500). Additionally, African American females represent over half of the American population of being trafficked.
