Exercise not only decreases weight, but it also lowers cholesterol, strengthens the heart, improves mobility, enhances respiratory function, and increases oxygen consumption just to name a few (Aldwin & Gilmer, 2013, Chapters 5-8). Changes to have a healthy diet is especially important to promote optimal health. By increasing cholesterol intake, and in return fueling your body with adequate amounts of fruits and vegetables is beneficial to all the organ systems. Also, light-to-moderate alcohol consumption will decrease risk factors such as heart disease or liver disease. (Aldwin & Gilmer, 2013, Chapter 6). Although used as a coping method and is used for enjoyment, smoking is harmful to the body. It destroys many aspects to the organ systems, such as constricting blood vessels, increasing blood pressure, promoting atherosclerosis, causing blood clots and smoking can also lead to heart failure and lung cancer (Aldwin & Gilmer, 2013, Chapter 6). Lastly, stress can adhere to health issues as well. It is important to relieve stress in order to promote optimal aging.
