This can be taken many different ways, a few being the forced conformity of the gender binary or the way society expects us to follow their path of hatred. The gender binary is forced on us from the moment we are born and the moment we try to stray from it we put our life in danger. Transphobic and homophobic peoples will go out of their way to make your life a living hell, some even going as far to hurt you physically or even murder you for not conforming and for being happy in your own skin. Parents will not allow their children to dress as their favorite characters because “ a girl can not be a superhero!” or that “ a boy can not be a princess!”. We tell children that they can be whatever they want in life but then take away so many possibilities because of expectations placed upon us. Another way we are expected to conform is to follow the path of hatred laid by people long before us. We are expected to either hate or deal with the hate others throw toward marginalized groups. When a women is successful we are meant to sit and laugh at the sexist jokes saying that “ she must have slept her way to the top” , when an unarmed black man is shot we are meant to make jokes about how “clearly he deserved it, he’s a thug!” even when he was innocent, or how when a person come out as transgender people make fun of them and use their incorrect pronouns. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles.” You will never find peace in what other have done, you have to trust yourself to find your own inner peace by sticking to your principles. Many people do not stick to their principles anymore because they know that if they are against the majority they will be ridiculed. In order to stay true to yourself you must stick to your principles, and your principles may change when provided with new information. You have to do what you truly believe to be right. Emerson’s ideas were relevant for his time and they remain relevant even now. I believe his ideals will continue to be relevant long after my generation is gone.
