Communication is a skill that I learned at an early age. When growing up, learning proper communication skills is a key to becoming a successful citizen. I have taken the time to go over my self-assessment tests and have had the opportunity for others to express their opinions about my skills. The self-evaluation test has brought to my attention that I have a “Driver” kind of communication style, a “high self monitor” score of 14, and a “compromising” type of management style. My goal is to slow down my speed of talking. Successfully learning how to complete this task will allow my audience to understand my messages clearly, and it will make me a more efficient co-worker, friend, and student.

Even though I barely pass being a “high self-monitor”, it makes sense with my “Driver” style of communication. A classmate, peer, and friend commented, “You do not like to hurt people 's feelings and avoid all types of confrontation.” That statement describes the perfect definition of a “high self-monitor”: being very “conscious of how one is behaving and communicating to others.” I have a tendency to mask my feelings when I am put in a group setting. For instance, I work at Under Armour, where I have fifteen other co-workers I come in contact with on a daily basis. Most of the time I am in charge of different projects around the store. I adapt working with all my co-workers on either small or big projects. When doing special tasks, I have learned all workers work differently. I will change the way I work and communicate with them in different ways to make sure the job gets done efficiently and properly. With my “Driver” style of communication and “high self-monitoring”, I am direct and straightforward but also cautious when communicating with different individuals. However, I tussle with being direct, which can cause people to get upset when I give them items that need to be completed. I also have a problem with my talkative speed, which leads to miscommunication and difficultly getting points across. To correct this problem, I need to slow down my speed when talking, which will clearly define what I am trying to say. Also at work, slowing my talking speed will allow my co-workers to feel that I am not being so direct, but that I am just explaining what our team needs to get done. If I can “stop and pause for one second-use my thoughts and put them into words slowly,” I will be able to have my audience understand my messages
