One of modern society’s favourite pastimes is watching and comparing films. Films have the ability to make us laugh, cry, or even think while touching our hearts no matter what the genre is. Contemporary media genres have dramatically changed since classical literary times, which divided theatrical and literature into groups of drama and comedy, giving birth to genres. Films have become difficult to place into a specific genre, as “any theme may appear in any genre” (Chandler 1997, p. 1) resulting in genres blending continuously. For example, a Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) film is classified in that genre due to its situational context and fundamental plot, though, Sci-Fi films may also be categorised into genres such as horror (Aliens), comedy

In doing so, we will compare story, characters, concepts, and more, of two of the biggest franchise films - Star Wars (SW) and Harry Potter (HP) - in which I will show why Star Wars is the better franchise.
Despite their difference in genre, the movies share many similarities. both franchises share many similarities they have followed the same basic structure of ‘The Hero’s Journey,’ also known as the ‘hero myth’ or ‘monomyth’ (Hokanson & Fraher 2008 p. 29) like many stories/films beforehand (Hokanson & Fraher 2008 p. 28). Not only are the similarities present due to both franchises using a monomyth structure, one would have to question whether J.K. Rowling knowingly plagiarised George Lucas? The similarities are almost identical, especially regarding characters. One can see these identical similarities when compared.
Luke Skywalker vs Harry Potter – Both characters are the heroes in their stories. As an infant, their parents died leaving them orphaned. …show more content…
They rescued and hid the hero as a baby (from the evil forces) with their aunt and uncle. Both characters watched over the main hero throughout their life and became a mentor to them with their training. They have the knowledge of everything surrounding the hero’s hidden past, though, are not prepared to share all the information until the hero needs to know; this is due to wanting to protect them. They both died protecting the hero, sacrificing themselves for the cause. One key difference between the characters is that Obi-Wan was strictly by the books type of character. He refused to do anything which could be deemed as non-Jedi characteristics. Dumbledore had a dark side during his early years, and could have easily become Voldemort.
Death Eaters vs Sith – Both universes have their own evil forces which has minions obeying every command. In Star Wars, there is always two; a master and an apprentice. These apprentice, such as Darth Vader and Darth Maul, command troops to do the bidding of Dark Lords, such as The Emperor and Darth Sidious. In Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort uses those in his close circle, known as Death Eaters, to carry out his orders and recruit others for his army. Both tend to wear black, hooded
