Classroom Violence Prevention

This chapter discussed how to prevent and respond to violence on school grounds to insure the safety of the students. Although this was a fairly short chapter, the content is important because of the high number of violence and shootings that occur at schools, it is good to be well educated on how to prevent, respond, and aware of violence. This chapter discusses about strategies to prevent and how to respond to different types of situations with facts, examples, and through dialogs. An “Aha” moment was the section of observing and identifying the signs and de-escalating potentially explosive situations. one of the mornings that I went into my cooperative teachers classroom, she showed and stated to me that there is a new locking system for the doors. There are only a few classrooms that are using this system right now. The doors lock has a slide with one side marked with red and the other side green. This locking system was set up and placed on the inside of the door so that if there was a lockdown the teacher does not need to open the door and lock it from inside the classroom. Another way that I have observed of being prepared for the classroom is to have a safety plan and first aid kit right on sight just in case. The teacher that I am observing has a first aid backpack and kit located directly next to the door on the counter, where it can easily be …show more content…
It stated in the chapter that in order to prevent escalated violence is that “creating a supportive school community is more important than ever”. Although the teacher I am observing is the only transitional kindergarten teacher at the school, the other kindergarten teachers have created a community with each other. For example when one of the teachers needs help or advise. For example there was an incident that occurred on a day that I was not there but my cooperating teacher told me everything that happened and the procedure that took place for me to learn in case of an emergency. During the morning recess one of the students in the classroom fell off the jungle gym and hit her head on the ground resulting in the student having to go to the hospital and get staples in her head. Since it was during recess that teacher was in her classroom when one of the students ran in telling her what had happened. The recess supervisors got a first aid kit and stuff to try to stop the bleeding and walked for the office to call 911, call the parents or emergency contact, and to alert the nurse. Due to the young age on of the other teachers gathered the students in the class with their own to avoid crowding the student that was hurt.     The majority of new policies are met with a mixture of praise and criticism. However, it would be a challenge to find any teacher who does not believe it is his or her responsibility to protect the students. Allowing teachers to be armed in the classroom would increase the likelihood of everyone surviving if an active shooter enters the room because it would provide additional protection if the teachers are properly trained. Knowing any of us could be armed by making this policy public knowledge could make the possibility of that shooter entering the building even less likely.
