Gun Violence In School Shootings

Introduction At the time of this writing, there has been 144 school shootings since the Sandy Hook massacre. School shootings are becoming an all too-often occurrence and society members are no longer shocked when it happens. It has become a norm in the United States. However, if we were to ask the parents of those lost kindergarteners if this is a problem that needs to be immediately addressed, I am certain they would scream ‘yes’ from the top of their lungs. If I, a middle school teacher, were asked if school gun violence is a national concern, I would also piercingly argue that action must take place before another precious life is lost. One potential solution proposed in the last few years calls for the arming of teachers. The solution …show more content…
In Columbine, armed guards made little to no difference in preventing or slowing down Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Now, security resource officers may be helpful, but they come at a great cost. If we were to place one SRO in every secondary public school, it would cost $16.3 billion a month! Moreover, there has been little study over the effectiveness of arming teachers and preventing violence. In fact, we know that more guns increase potential for accidents. Everyone makes mistakes, but it would be especially awful if a teacher made a mistake (i.e. falls out of a bag, accidental misfire, magazines could fall out, etc.). That is a liability no one wants to assume. Furthermore, we live in a litigious culture, and the potential lawsuits would be appalling and game changing for the society as a …show more content…
I recently had a professional development session at one of the other middle schools here in town. The classrooms in this building have one wall that is a glass garage door and all the garage doors open to a commons area. While this looks nice, you can see directly into the classroom. Furthermore, I felt compelled to ask if the glass was bullet proof. It’s not. In fact, there were no great places to go in the event of a lockdown. It almost appeared as if everyone was on display. This is great instructionally, but not from a security standpoint. If a teacher had a gun raised in one of these classes, it would be hard for an outsider to know if they were approaching a gunman or if they were the person of interest, as the rooms have great sound barriers in place. This could potentially lead to confusion for local law enforcement. Again, this liability is too much for both the teacher and the district. I have to ask why any district would support this level of liability and risk. Insurance premiums would likely skyrocket and policies would have to be seriously overhauled. Current research in school safety is somewhat limited; therefore, knee-jerk reactions should be avoided at all costs. Arming teachers is just that: a knee-jerk reaction. While I agree that something must be done to stop this insanity in school violence, I do not support that suggestion that arming

27th February 2018 Miami Herald 3511 NW 91 Ave Doral, Florida, US. 33172 Dear Editor, Yesterday, you reported on the tragedy that occurred in Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, where seventeen innocent people had lost their lives. This is ridiculous as the United States Legislative Body doesn’t seem to be affected and not being able to resolve this problem. The Legislative Body’s solution is to increase school security by having experienced teachers possess guns during school hours to defend students and themselves. This solution is perceiving as teachers may use the guns to protect themselves but not the students.…

Although on a rare occasion there may be an iniquitous teacher, the vast majority are benevolent people who are willing to save lives. In various deadly situations of the past, teachers have saved lives by the means of a gun. Because a gun was easily accessible, a Missouri teacher stopped a shooter who “killed two students and wounded seven others at a high school” (Malcolm, 2016, p. 6). However, due to current gun-free zones, the likelihood that a teacher has access to a gun is very slim. By providing every teacher with a gun, more situations like that of Missouri would occur, rather than more situations like the Connecticut shooting at…

Proposals offered by the gun lobby to repeal the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act and arm teachers as a solution to curb those rare instances of gun violence at school. Teachers are not trained law enforcement officers – their purpose is to be educators and role models. Gun violence prevention measures for our schools should focus on educating kids about the dangers of firearms, and reminding gun-owning parents to safely own and secure firearms and ammunition, rather than on arming teachers. A study of 37 school shootings in 26 states found that in nearly two-thirds of the incidents, the attacker got the gun from his or her own home or…

When a shooter is on campus, a teacher can defend the students from the shooter by carrying a gun. According to ABC action news, "McGhee says he would prefer to see a study done involving all stakeholders, looking into what can be done to protect students, and then change should be implemented based on factual findings. " The shooter would have more of a challenge killing students if a teacher is armed with a handgun. The teacher could save many lives and injuries by defending their students. Moreover, A teacher could defend herself and save their own life with the help of their gun.…

Imagine the idea of being defenseless against an attacker trying to wreck havoc on your teachers and fellow classmates. The worst feeling in the world is when you are helpless, and there is nothing you can do during a situation. Not allowing our teachers to carry a weapon while on school grounds is a great way to achieve this helpless feeling. Since 2013, there have been over two hundred school shootings in America- an average of nearly one a week. Between 2013 and 2015 an average of two shootings on K-12 schools took place per month.…

Many teachers and administrators are unsure about how pupils may handle altercations and stressors of everyday campus life with the easy access of guns and worry that talking to students about their schoolwork and grades can cause retaliation. Also do you think a student would be able to look at a teacher the same after they saw them shoot a person the kids would be tarfided. As already stated everyone is dangerous but people do not realize how dangerous they are until they have blood on their hands. This would also greatly affect their career and if the teacher moved it would be hard to get a job because this would be on their permanent record and the educational board wherever they are will not want to hire someone who is dangerous whether it is in self defence or not. Another thing is what would happen if a student where to get ahold of the gun think of how much damage they could cause with…

Most of the countries that with the strongest gun laws have the lowest gun death rate. The mass shooting in schools in America is done by kids having control over guns. In an age where people are trying to take guns away from law-abiding citizens; we need our guns now more than ever. Everytime there is a mass shooting this debate pops up, yet we continue to have mass shootings. If some teachers were allowed to conceal and carry guns in schools, mass shootings would dwindle. The resource officer at the Parkland shooting never went inside and 17 children died, meanwhile, the resource officer at the Maryland school shooting engaged the shooter and saved countless lives. This illustrates the effects that a capable person with a gun can have on saving the lives of children.…

The fact that the firearms are concealed is crucial. Since the handguns are concealed, a criminal would be unable to detect whether a classroom has armed staff or not (Crime Prevention Research Center). Students who are nervous when seeing firearms wouldn't be scared because the handguns would be hidden. President Trump advises school boards to protect the staff of each district with insurance to reduce the risk of liability, which should put those with concern for the staff at ease (“Arming Teachers and School Staff”).…

Specialists have grasped the concept of becoming proactive instead of reactive to situations where lives are at stake. Professionals believe that arming teachers in school districts can help protect children from the up rise of violence in school. Although this idea may be a headed in the right direction, I feel as if there are more effective procedures. Hiring armed security guards removes the cost a school would have to pay to train teachers. This will also eliminate the risk of schools being dropped from their insurance policies or having to pay more as a result of having armed teachers.…

School shootings are a trend that unfortunately has been getting popular for more than a decade. This is causing schools to increase security and prepare for a potential war against unknown individuals. This has shown a negative effect on a significant amount of students who now see school as unsafe. Metal detectors, security cameras, and many other security safeguards have been a regular necessity for schools. Instead of using these things as a last resort effort to prevent violence there needs to be a less invasive plan in place that limits the security presence on campuses without it being overwhelming.…
