Because schizophrenics have a higher chance of being homeless, in poverty, social marginalization or incarceration, they carry a higher risk of drugs and or alcohol abuse. Having a diorder like schizophrenia makes your life hard. It prevents you from functioning correctly. Imagine just how hard it would be to find a job with this kind of disorder. Addiction is more common in the schizophrenic population because some of the social consequences of this mental illness. You think finding a job is hard?
