I believe that Jay Gatsby and Othello’s inability to face the truth lead to their tragic consequences, but in real life I believe it is not the case. The Great Gatsby and ‘Othello’ are both stories beautifully constructed by William Shakespeare and F. Scott Fitzgerald. I believe that the refusal to face the truth for Gatsby and Othello, was definitely an element used by the authors to construct them as tragic protagonists.
Jay Gatsby from The Great Gatsby is an ambitious and hopeful character. He is the protagonist of the novel and he is pursuing an unrealistic dream, thinking that Daisy Buchanan was a nature of perfection that could not possibly be real. He believes in the idea that he could change the past and …show more content…
In Chapter 5, page 102 Fitzgerald states that there must have been moments even Daisy falls short of Gatsby’s dream, though it was not her fault, but the colossal vitality of his illusion. Nick reminds Gatsby that the past cannot be repeated, but Gatsby does not agree with nick.
““Can’t repeat the past?” he cried incredulously. “Why of course you can! ”” (Ch6, Pg117)
Gatsby is so caught up in the illusions he has created that he believe he can change the past. Gatsby ended up in tragic consequences by his own illusions and his own inability to face the truth. But from another perspective, the setting of the novel could have had an impact on Gatsby’s characteristic. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald indicated the materialism and consumer culture of The Jazz Age in 1920 . During that time, the emptiness that existed was disguised by social popularity and …show more content…
And so he continues to make his racist remarks and accuses Othello to have enchanted her white daughter, because he is black and old.
Gatsby and Othello are both protagonists and to some degree heroes. I have come to a conclusion that their refusal to face the truth leads to their tragic death. I agree the actions of the two characters lead to their death, however I believe it does not represent the reality of the story. For say, Gatsby would have lived if he had simply accepted the fact that him and Daisy would never be together.
“He wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say: "I never loved you.” (Ch6, Pg117)
Gatsby wanted Daisy to say he never loved tom, he wanted and believed that he could change or erase the past. Gatsby does not realise that everybody has to live with the consequences of their past, whether they want to or not. I could also see how blinded Gatsby is by his own illusion of the past, future and in Daisy, he does not realise the idealistic features he has of Daisy are unreal. Othello in contrast, was blinded by Iago’s lies and his own inability to face the truth . Othello believed that because of his skin colour his success would be easily diluted, this element of him caused the tragedy of his death and the death of his wife Desdemona. And in
