This ministry is the most feared out of all of them and is not spoken about, because it is where thought criminals are punished. It is used to house thought criminals, and to engrave the love of Big Brother in their hearts by brainwashing them through torture. The room Winston and Julia are sent to is called room 101. Room 101 is a torture chamber in the Ministry of Love, in which the prisoners are forced to face their worst fears. They are tortured to a point where they will confess to their crimes and even betray their loved ones, for Winston it was Julia. O’Brien, an inner party member, says, “You asked me once, what was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world.” (Orwell 296). In Room 101 the criminal is not just faced with their worst nightmare, but is in such a way that it persecutes the criminal. For Winston, his head was trapped in a box of rats in which the rats were to devour the victim’s face. An old man in the Ministry of Love said “You can take the whole lot of them and cut their throats in front of my eyes, and I 'll stand by and watch it. But not Room 101!" (Orwell 249).
