Public Policing versus Private Security Comparison
Public policing and private security are the two paths in the policing field for individuals to choose from. The roles and responsibilities in both paths have many similarities and significant differences. Public policing and private security both have comparable goals, histories and training. There are different methods and legal limitations towards completing these goals within both agencies. Public policing are more restricted and limited by the government and laws, but have extended authority to render arrests or detaining possible offenders. Despite the fact that private security is not as limited by the government and laws; the guards are incapable in definite situations without requesting assistance from the public policing agencies at the scene for arrests, interrogating and detaining of a possible offender. Both agencies are useful and necessary for many situations in the criminal justice system despite all these differences. The use of private security to protect retail businesses, private organizations or public special events permits the public policing agency to be more focused on the other aspects of public protection without spreading the agency thin. Public policing and private security complement each other but can tend to cause frustrations for both organizations as well. The two organizations can complete a wider range of goals when working together, not under minding their ability to work well individually. It is a true love hate relationship between public policing and private security
