Analysis of the Dramatic Performance of “Ti Jean and His Brothers” by Derek Walcott In his play “Ti Jean and his brothers”, Derek Walcott presents the tale of three brothers who are dared by the devil, who is striving to grow human qualities, so that he can enjoy the evil he ventures. Walcott attempts to convey a number of issues and or themes within the play to show that people and society can fight persistently for their freedom. One such theme is that of pride and humility which is seen in Gros Jean and Ti Jean individually. Any one human who can make the Devil feel anger, rage and human weakness will be rewarded by the Devil; anyone who fails to do so will be eaten. Gros Jean tries to get ahead by dealing with the Devil in the form of a White Planter. His instinctive force is easily outmaneuvered by the scheming Devil. The group dramatic performance focused on the departure of Gros Jean from his mother’s house and the way he spoke about his arm being as strong as iron, “Maman I have an arm of iron I have nothing I fraid…” Further, he does not regard the warning of his mother to not rely on his physical strength. In dialogue he told his mother that “the world is not the same as it was in your time.” This shows that he felt himself to be a man and his mother's wisdom was irrelevant, as he states “Is big man I reach now, not no little boy again”. In addition, Gros Jean treated the animals unfairly as he calls them names such as ‘slimy …show more content…
He receives his mother’s guidance to his heart; he also asked his mother to pray for him because he believes in god, as he states “Now pray for me mamam”. He understood that strength and intellect alone could not allow him to conquer the devil. He develops a friendship with the frog, the cricket, the firefly and bird and he calls them ‘friends’. He complemented and appreciated the animals because they were God’s creation and that each animal had a part to play in the world. Ti Jean was also a respectable young man; this is seen when he meets the old man. Further, in the performance he compares himself to the Biblical character David and hopes to win over the devil as David won over Goliath, as he sings the song “ I go bring down Goliath’. His humbleness is exhibited in the dramatic performance and as a result will easily defeat the devil at his own
