Personal Narrative: My Internship In El Mexicano Newspaper

I started this internship on the 27th of June I would have liked to have done it during the first summer session, however, I had to take an additional 3 credit hours before that because I wasn’t aware my remedial math course didn’t go towards my degree. I have worked for El Mexicano Newspaper for about two years now, but that was mostly as a distributive position so when I realized I needed to do an internship to gain experience this was my first choice. I have never been a confident writer before this internship and now after having done it professionally I must say that a proofreader and editor is a lifesaver. Consequently, this internship took me out of my comfort zone a lot and for a while that was touch, however I learned to adapt to that and became a better communicator because of it. The toughest part of this internship for me was probably interviewing people. Therefore, that may be the reason why I enjoyed writing about analysis pieces rather than communicative ones. Specifically the #BlackLivesMatter movement, which, thus, made me, read the rather controversial book YURUGU: An Afrikan- Centered Critique of European Culture Thought and Behavior.
The book written by Marimba Ani discusses the notion of Yurugu, which Ani defines as, “A being in Dogon mythology which is responsible for disorder in the universe. This is a being conceived in denial of the natural order which then acts to initiate and promote disharmony in the universe.” (Ani, P. xxviii) I used that term quite often in my piece entitled #CompassionMatters and used it to discuss how challenging a movement’s rhetoric to apply your own is often problematic because it takes away from the overall agency and empowerment a movement is supposed to

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

I was born and raised in a highly traditional and impoverished section of Mexico. I shared a two-story home with my extended-family. Since childhood, I was expected to follow my ancestor’s footsteps, steps that led into the corn fields of Potosi. However, thanks to my father’s desire to improve my family’s economic future, we decided to move to Texas. This time we had a one-bedroom apartment all to ourselves.…

In life you confront many problems, some are easy, some are not. Like Santosh Kalwar said “ Never cry because you have mountains of problem in your hands to solve. Always smile because each problems will someday resolve”. When I was in Los Angeles, California about 9 years ago. Life was simple going to school, focused on getting good grades, helping my mom with some chores and etc.…

I know many people. Some of them are amazing at a sport in which I only possess mediocre skills in, others are able to maintain their high standard GPA's, while others keep their commendable reputations of perfectness. So, I know many meritable people, and then there is me, and for a girl who has failed so many times in her life ( tests, sports, a vain attempt at artistic skills) it becomes a little delusive to continue to believe that one day I will "triumph." That one day I will "get my time to shine. " You eventually grow accustomed to always hearing "no", receiving the letter that reads "we are sorry to inform you that..." or simply having another door shut right into your face, and after a while, per say my sixteen years of life in…

Writing Sample Without a doubt in my mind the best class I have taken in the past two years of my academia was my high school Spanish class. I developed a very good relationship with my instructor Sr. K, that was probably the biggest reason it was my favorite class; However, the way his class was stuctured and how he taught contributed it to being my favorite class in the last two years. We would always start the day with a class plan so everyone would know what was going to take place in class and the next. Sr. k was very detailed in lessons…

African Americans have always faced inequalities and injustices from the birth of America. African Americans were first segregated from whites due the creation of the slave codes, which distinguished who was white and who was black, or in other terms, who has rights and who does not. Once slavery ended it did not end segregation or even racism; the Jim Crow laws defined segregation. Black people were not allowed to go to white schools, or even sit next to a white a person on a bus. Blacks did not get the same treatment or equality of public facilities and even more.…

law firm internship. An agonizing few days passed as I waited for a reply, and I was ecstatic to learn that I had been chosen for the internship. No words could explain how excited I was but the smile that filled my face said it all. At this internship, I built upon what I learned at Hyde Square Task Force and developed more confidence and determination to succeed in a professional environment. Not only did I take Shakespeare, writing, public speaking, civil rights and art classes, but I also worked in an office, participated in community service events, and visited colleges, which all helped me explore and adapt to different ambiances of the work…

During my internship experience, I learned a lot of things that I thought I knew but are misconstrued on. With that being said, I know everything must be done in decent order or this will cause chaos and lead to confusion. I also learned everything takes patience and is very time- consuming. I became frustrated, so many times and just wanted to give up, but I had to remind myself that hard times are going to come and everything is going to work out. Many times I sat on my bed crying because it seems like everything piled on me at one time.…

Growing up in Mexico, I didn't have the best of everything. I had and still have a hard working family, but as a kid, I would always see my parents struggling to put food on our table for my siblings and myself. To this date, every time I am in contact with my relatives in Mexico they always tell me how much people struggle to provide a living for their families, especially when there is really no place to work or any resources that can help them out with such needs. As of now, life has been treating me well; I have a wonderful wife, an amazing 2 year old son and a baby that is soon to be due and a great job! My motivation to do this mission trip is by putting myself in the shoes of all those people that have to struggle every day and night to…
