The Renal System: The Urinary System

Improved Essays
The Renal System, which is also known as the Urinary System, is made up of the kidneys, urinary bladder, urethra and ureters. The kidneys play an important role in the Renal System; they filter the blood in order to eliminate waste and produce urine, maintain the body’s fluid balance, make hormones as well as balances the levels of some of the chemicals in the blood. The urinary bladder, urethra and the ureters together make up the urinary tract. The urinary tract acts as a drainage system because it drains the urine that comes from the kidneys, stores it, and then releases it during the process of urination. The main functions of the Renal System are homeostasis of water, ions, calcium, red blood cells, blood pressure and also pH. It also …show more content…
Usually, bacteria are the most frequent cause of Urinary Tract Infections because the bacteria can conquer the body’s normal defenses which can cause an infection. But usually the bacteria that go into the urinary tract are quickly removed by the body before they can cause any symptoms. UTIs often result from bacteria that are found living in the bowel. E. coli is the bacterium that causes a great number of UTIs. Mycoplasma and Chlamydia, infections that can be sexually transmitted and the treatment of sexual partners, are microbes that are able to contaminate both the urethra and the reproductive system. The urinary tract is made up of systems in order to help prevent infections. Most of the time Urinary Tract Infections are not significant but sometimes the infections can lead to major problems like a kidney infection. Chronic kidney infections and acute kidney infections, on the other hand, are very serious infections. Chronic kidney infections can cause long-lasting damage including poor kidney function, high blood pressure as well as other problems. Acute kidney infections can sometimes be life-threatening if the bacteria go into the …show more content…
Staying hydrated and drinking a lot of liquids can help cleanse out the bacteria from the system. You can also prevent UTIs by urinating often and also when the impulse arises. When urine stays in the bladder for a long period of time it can cause bacteria to develop. Men and women should urinate after intercourse in order to cleanse the bacteria that could have come into the urethra while having sex. Wiping from the front to the back is also important when trying to preventing UTIs. Clothing also plays a role in prevent Urinary Tract Infections. Tight fitting clothing like jeans should be evaded because they confine the moisture and allow the bacteria to develop. Loose clothes and cotton underwear should be used because the air near the urethra will remain dry. Also, using a spermicide, diaphragm or unlubricated condoms can lead to Urinary Tract Infections because they increase irritation and allow bacteria to

Although not all catheter-associated urinary tract infections can be prevented, it is believed that a large number could be avoided by properly managing indwelling catheters (Stokowski, 2009). Limiting catheter use and, when a catheter is indicated, minimizing the duration the catheter remains in place are primary strategies for CAUTI prevention. The SHEA/IDSA guidelines recommend that other methods for urinary management, such as condom catheters or in-and-out catheterization, should be considered before indwelling catheters are used. Nice post Dana! As we know, prevention is better than cure, and many UTI's can be prevented if we didn't use so many indwelling urinary catheters. The most common hospital-acquired infection is urinary tract infection (UTI), which accounts for almost 40% of all nosocomial infections (Saint, 2008). Most hospital-acquired UTIs are associated with urinary catheters, a commonly used device among hospitalized patients (Saint,2008). Urinary catheterization occurs in 25% of patient hospitalization, but other methods of prevention should be assessed first (Saint, 2008).…

Antibiotic resistant bacteria are bacteria that are resistant to the antibiotics that at one time were able to kill them. It is a growing issue in today’s society especially since it is unknown how these microbes are able to mutate around a treatment that was once lethal to them. The consensus in the healthcare community is that these microbes will be an increasing threat until a solution is found. There is still discussion and controversy over the best method of identification and infection control that should be put into practice to prevent the spread of multidrug resistant bacteria. However, the most prevalent controversy surrounding this topic seems to be over how the taxpayer’s money is best spent related to new treatment of these microbes,…

However these defences can be compromised by certain healthcare interventions and can lead to infections. For example the insertion of a catheter can lead to a catheter associated urinary tract infection. Catheters are used to help individuals who have urinary incontinence or just to help drain the bladder. An infection can occur due to several reasons such as, inserting a non-sterile catheter, the backflow of the urine into the bladder or simply not emptying the drainage bag.…

Infections acquired during a hospital stay is one of the reasons why healthcare costs have increased throughout the years. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) no longer reimburse hospitals for these preventable infections (Quinn, 2015). Due to this rule implemented by CMS, hospitals are feeling the burden and patients are experiencing unnecessary extended days in the hospital (Sampathkumar, Barth, Johnson, Marosek, Johnson, Worden, & Tompson, 2016). One type of infection that follows this rule is catheter acquired urinary tract infection (CAUTI). CAUTI is one of the easiest infections to prevent, yet 13,000 people still die annually from these infections (Sampathkumar, et al, 2016).…

Overall, about 180 liters of fluid is filtered by the kidneys every day. Absorption in the kidney is the reclamation of goods such as water and small molecules (glucose, AAs, water, salt) from the filtrate into the blood in the peritubular capillary. Most absorption occurs in the Proximal convoluted tubule, but it can be fine-tuned in the Distal convoluted tubule. One important hormone is Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) which helps with the reabsorption of water with aquaporins in the collecting duct. There are many routes that can be used for reabsorption such as the transcellular route, the paracellular route, Primary & secondary active transport, and passive transport.…

Indwelling Urinary Catheters Foley catheters are used for many patients who have been admitted to the hospital, as well as patients who undergo lengthy surgeries. Approximately 15-25% of hospitalized patients are ordered an indwelling catheter during their stay; most of these patients stay catheterized for 2-4 days (Aljohi et al., 2016). It is important to use proper technique to avoid catheter acquired UTI’s (CAUTI’s) because hospitals don’t get money when patients receive hospital acquired infections and patients come into the hospital to get better, not to get sicker. CAUTI’s can lead to cystitis, pyelonephritis, and in severe cases, end up as a bacterial invasion in the bloodstream called bacteremia. Bacteremia can result in septicemia…

The most common bacteria that is responsible for cystitis is, Escherichia coli (E. coli). Pyelonephritis is an example, cystitis and pyelonephritis share many similarities the difference between the two is where the infection is located.
