The reading is all about mass communication transforming into media communication. So what is the difference between mass communication and media communication? Mass communication has fewer channels than media communication; It has unified audiences while the latter has diverse ones; the people or the users are in control of what the message is in the media while in mass, the sender of the message is the one who is in control. These are just some examples of the differences between mass and media communication. However, I won’t be discussing their differences, rather, I will discuss to you what mass communication means.
Mass Communication as a media institution. There are different divisions in Mass Communication such as print, film, radio, television, advertising and public relations. The said divisions establish huge and known organizations. Although I disagree that these organizations are wildly successful. Yes, you gain huge amount of money but if you don’t have enough consumers/customers/audiences then you are failing in the industry. Mass communication is a field of study since the 1950’s and it has evolved ever since. During 1950’s, in studying mass communication you have to know its basic education, empirical research of mass communication processes and effects, and critical and cultural studies of the mass media. One example of academic approach in mass communication is to research about it. Content, audience, and effects of the media are its main focus. Early researchers have concluded that mass communication had no significant effect on its audience. However, I beg to disagree. Mass communication has a huge effect on its audience because mass communication is everywhere. At home, at work, at school, etc. If we put wrong information in these people’s minds then don’t you think that it would have a huge effect in our
