Register to read the introduction… It is great to see organizations around that offers free meals to the less fortunate or just happen to be hungry nearby. It is great to see people donate and take time out of their day to help, even if they have alternative purpose of being there. This was my first time volunteering with this organization, and quite a large crowd showed up that day. There were three large trays of premade main dish, and they completely ran out in the first hour. Another volunteer had to scramble to microwave large amount of canned ravioli. Those visiting this soup kitchen know exactly what and how much they could eat and will ask for the exact amount so nothing would be wasted. Other observations confirms what we learned in class, because at least half of the under privileged individuals visiting this soup kitchen are overweight. It is safe to assume they have an unbalanced diet, and do not have sufficient intake of nutrients on a daily basis. There were large amount of soon to be expired bread products donated by Safeway free for anyone to take. When they are hungry later, all there is to eat is bread, which provides a lot of unnecessary carb and glucose causing them to gain …show more content…
However, due to the bad rainy weather, there was clearly a decline in the number of people visiting the soup kitchen early onto the shift. Almost no groups of family visiting together, instead, one person would come to pick up food for the family. Due to the sporadic rain, those that choose to eat at the soup kitchen ate inside. Coincidently, most of the visitors today came as a group, then sat and enjoyed the meal together. The supervisor wanted to treat them today, for dessert; we gave them very delicious looking cakes. At the end of the day, four large cakes and two pies were eaten. As I worked, I learned this organization runs soup kitchen out of different locations every day for at least two meals a day in Livermore and Pleasanton. They also provide the service of delivering prepared lunches to underprivileged schools. It amazes how much the people of this city care about the underprivileged, quite a bit more than other cities around America and the rest of the world. The location of the Friday shift is in a church, and this church provides the homeless a place to sleep during weathers under a certain degree. A warm room to sleep; roof and walls to shelter them from the cold at night, this church rotates with others throughout the week in order to prevent the neighbors from complaining of homeless

I was sponsored by my husband and he loved the idea and came along, sponsored by his parents (who are regular volunteers at Warm Blessings). The night was definitely a night to remember. We were furnished boxes by Warm Blessings, Inc. Nice boxes! Boxes that fit washers, ranges and refrigerators, not boxes that someone would typically find in a dumpster. We were furnished with a soup line that may be easily accessible to the homeless but ours was really close and also over-stocked.…

One cold night in late January, volunteers counted 2659 homeless people in the Sacramento County. Many were found sleeping on the sidewalks, near parks, and even along rivers (Hubert). Homelessness has become normal in America because it is always seen as the effect of individual choices. Because of this, many fear and re-categorize (putting them in a different social class) the homeless. In Sacramento, statistics show that nearly 65% of veterans make up the homeless population.…

During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…
