The Transformation Of Reality In Life Of Pi By Yann Martel

Life of Pi by Yann Martel is a fiction book about an Indian boy named Piscine Patel also known as Pi, who is stuck at sea without animals and no help. However, throughout his journey at sea, we see him struggle for food for himself and Richard Parker. We see him losing his hope for survival slowly, however, we also see his hope rise as he finds more sources for survival such as fish. Pi felt guilty for eating fish and the cook for his survival. This leads to understanding that Pi has created the story with the animals because he wants to ask for God’s forgiveness for what happened and what he did for survival on the lifeboat. The author of Life of Pi, Yann Martel speaks of fiction as “the selective transforming of reality, the twisting of it to bring out its essence”. He is endeavoring to state that by taking and enhancing certain qualities of Pi to create a fictional character. Martel twisted the narrative of Pi to draw out its actual essence and to create a story that would catch the reader's attention. To compose a book to keep readers intrigued he assumed a non-fictional position and time heightened its essence, yet by doing as such the story is never again in the light of truth in this manner it's presently known to be fiction. The book demonstrated how Pi’s faith in God helped him survive and overcome obstacles at sea. The confidence Pi had and the circumstances he was conveyed out of would be sufficient to make even those of little faith in God have some sort of belief. Indeed, even in Pi's darkest days God conveyed him. God is forgiving in light of the fact that despite the fact that Pi killed the cook, regardless he spared him and did not forsake him.
