This unjust act of racism and inequality within the school system can be dated back to 1896 with the Plessy V. Fugurson case which resulted in “ separate facilities for education” and an “ equal education”. It is from this case that we recall the term “ separate but equal”, in which whites and black had to attend separate schools but supposedly obtain an equal education. In 1899 was the Cumming V. Richmond case, in which three black families petitioned the court to allow their children to finish their high school education at a white high school, due to the closing of the local black high school which would intergrate African Americans and whites under one facility. In this school down south the parents express their acceptance of the idea of segregation with their children. Showing that their support will only be provided for a prom that is segregated, shows a parents prejudice. What is not taken under consideration is the views of the parent tend to be mocked and mimicked through their children. Parents actions show their seriousness towards the matter by showing that anything aside from this traditional segregation results in rebellion. The parents go out and develop another prom which will support their beliefs. What is occurring? Parents are steering a generation to feel that one race is inferior to the other, or the segregation due to skin color is expectable. Is this what education is really about? The purpose of education is not to treat others with inequality, but its to develop a more civilized society. Education also helps with the moral and ethical values, within both the adult learner and their education. Through education a philosophy of life is developed and a more defined meaning of many principles are understood. Education allows us to begin the foundation of achievement with our dreams and aspiration. It enhances and presents a broader perspective and leads to a healthier self fulfilled life, but racism causes some of theses idealistic situations to become a blur.
