The Issue Of Racial Profiling In America

Improved Essays
Racial profiling has been going on in America since before it was a country. When people began coming to America from other countries, the Indians were treated badly. As more people came to America, they brought Africans with them to be their slaves. There are several other examples of how the people in America have mistreated others because of where they came from and because they were different. Like the article states, the mentality of some in America is, if a person looks different, they probably can’t be trusted. Racial profiling needs to end. What happened to Shoshanna Hebshi is a perfect example of being judged by your skin color. Hebshi and two Indian-American men were apprehended from their flight on the 10th anniversary of the September …show more content…
Racial profiling is an issue that needs to receive more attention than it does. Fear and pride are two of the major contributors that allow racial profiling to continue. Fear of what is unknown about a person and pride because humans want to have someone they can try to be better than. Mistreating people of different ethnicity makes some people feel as though they have power over something that is supposedly inferior to them. When a group of people are targeted for their ethnicity, it belittles them. It says to them that the country they are trying to become a part of doesn’t want to trust them. That America, while it says all are welcome, will put the blame on them first when something goes wrong. For some people, putting others down makes them feel better about themselves. It is their tendency to put the majority of the people of a different ethnicity than their own into one group and say that they are only capable of doing bad things. Not all Americans think this way, but there are a few influential groups that on the surface say they are against racial profiling, but by their actions tell a different story. In the article it said that besides the woman that was falsely accused, there were two Indian-American men who were also detained. They were detained because other passengers complained about them going to the restroom. …show more content…
Hebshi was caught in the middle of such a triangle. Her arrest was based on nothing other than the fact that she had the same skin color as others who committed acts of terrorism in the past. Because of this, it was assumed that she must also be involved in terrorism. She had not acted in any suspicious way that could have warranted her arrest. The police force, TSA and Customs and Border Protection are three groups that are fueling the fire of racial profiling. The reasoning behind the poor treatment of ethnic minorities by these three groups is based on little more than prejudice. They don’t want anyone who acts, looks, or believes differently than they do to live peacefully in America. They are afraid of what they do not understand. To automatically assume that an African-American man is more capable of committing a crime than a white man, shows a major lacking in the understanding of some of the people on the police force. The ACLU is one organization that is working to end racial profiling. Racial profiling is detrimental to all aspects of society. If a person can be accused of a crime based only on their skin color, there is something wrong with America’s way of thinking. A person should not be mistreated because of their skin color. The character and actions of a person should be the determining factors of whether or not they are accused

However, not a lot of people think of the psychological and social damage and often will ignore it. As well as denied job positions and even at current jobs that one would hold, they would often find themselves passed over for promotions, no matter how good they were at jobs. Racial profiling is a racist tactic of people, not just by police who label others, but everyone as a whole. It is based on the attitude that consists of false and derogatory beliefs about the group that is being racially profiled (Bou-Habib 34). It is wrong by claiming that certain racial groups are responsible for all crimes and are less able to comply with laws and we have reason to reject racial profiling if its use is accompanied by a harassing manner on part of public officials towards those investigated (Bou-Habib 34). If you look at racial profiling from a conflict perspective, those with power and money define what is normal in our society.
