Change is inevitable: technology advances, families grow, and the environment deteriorates, yet some factors seem to evade change and persist throughout history such as racism and discrimination. According to Merriam-Webster, racism is the hatred and intolerance of a person based on the race to which the person belongs. A common misconception regarding racism is that it goes both way, since people of color cannot discriminate but white people can. Discrimination cannot go both ways, since only one race holds authority. In other terms, racism is just prejudice with the addition of power. Nonetheless, this does not signify that each side has disparate intentions of hate. Often one-sided by America, discrimination, the ongoing act of injustice, …show more content…
There have been countless acts of discrimination in the retail world, where sales clerks have either refused to show blacks expensive items, refused to let them enter, or even watched their every move while shopping. In one case, Rashid Polo, a normal teenager, rose into the spotlight after filming a store clerk racially profiling him and hovering over him as he shopped. Even famous celebrities such as Oprah have been discriminated against for shopping while black. These acts are easily forgotten and forgiven after a week of being the focus of attention. The high probability of such racial profiling being brushed aside makes it even easier for blacks to fall victim to discrimination more frequently by police. According to the Washington Post, blacks are “31 percent more likely to get pulled over than whites” for “driving while black” (Ingraham 2). Moreover discrimination is illustrated when the racist, Dylann Roof, who shot 9 innocent blacks, received a bullet proof vest and a trip to Burger King while Sandra Bland forgets to use her turn signal and in return has her head shoved into the ground, gets forcefully and unjustifiably arrested, and ends up mysteriously dead in her jail cell. The disgusting discrimination blacks deal with everyday accurately delineates the hateful acts as forgivable due to how blacks in the media are remembered as just another name. Blacks are rarely given opportunities when it comes to acting due to the lack of available black leads and black roles in movies and television shows. An example of discrimination is Stonewall, a “historic” film on the Stonewall riots for LGBT+ rights where in reality, the woman who started the riots, a black trans woman named Marsha P. Johnson was replaced in the film by a white male lead, perpetuating that a white man started the highly influential movement. The epitome of discrimination is whitewashing significant and symbolic blacks throughout history. Discrimination can also be seen in The Lord of the Rings, for giving absolutely no opportunities for black actors due to an entirely white cast. Discrimination is casting all white roles in a film where many possible roles including those of minor importance could have been filled with black actors. Meanwhile in the music industry, Nicki Minaj, a highly accomplished black musician, was denied a Video Music Award nomination for music video of the year, albeit her video broke a Vevo record and only one other video of the five nominated also broke a Vevo record. Discrimination is denying a rightful nomination to a black woman who met and went beyond all qualifications for the

Why is racism so deeply rooted among American history? Why is something as simple as skin color such subject to prejudice and discrimination in today’s society? The United States of America is built off of cruel acts of slavery and racism. So many white Americans did not realize that the acts they performed were horribly wrong and inhumane. They excused themselves simply because darker skin meant that that person was also inferior.…

Racism has turned our society into one full of hate and discrimination based of skin color and cultural beliefs. Unfortunately, discrimination has done more than just separate individuals socially it has also divided them into high and low economic classes. We have created a society in which people who are born into lower classes are unable to climb the social ladder and reach an elite economic status. Our society has made it almost impossible for those who are not in power to ever reach such a position. We have created a society in which those who are suffering will continue to suffer and be looked at as a having no value or ability to contribute to the success of the economy and structure of society.…

In the U.S., racism stands out as a sophisticated dilemma that has affected the country for many centuries. Racial profiling can be termed as the act of targeting or suspecting people considering observed group characteristics instead of taking an individual perspective. This practice is common in the U.S., especially in the police force. Minority groups have for a long time been profiled by police officers regarding crime and other violent behaviors. The African American community is highly linked with these facets.…

Racism is the belief that belonging to a particular race means a person has inherent characteristics that one deemed either superior or inferior. Based on racist belief, prejudice and discrimination are still alive today, though important figures as Martin L. King Jr. lead the movements to end this and enact anti-segregation laws. These ideas are being transmitted to younger generations despite the progress that has been made. The minorities and people who are victimized by this injustice find it often difficult to focus on the task at hand and the goals they set out for. When victimized, people often respond in two ways: acting out in a violent manner, or fighting against others.…

People have still not learned to treat everyone equal, despite their race or sexuality. In the late 1950’s Negroes were blatantly treated unfairly. Although in 2015, people are more careful about what leaves their mouth and are less obvious about specific racial dislikes, there are still instances of racial prejudice. Only three years ago, in 2012, America got the chance to witness the Trayvon-Martin Case, a perfect example of racial profiling.…

The sentence, “And you are not the guy and still you fit the description because there is only one guy who is always the guy fitting the description” is repeated. I think it’s repeated because the author want to remind us that there is always someone mistaken for the criminal. This is important because in the black community, people are always being frisk for unjustified reasons or rather they fit the description. Everytime I read that sentence, I start to think deeper and and ask myself why is there always one other person that fits the criminal description? I learned in my American Government class that black people are the highest victims of stop and frisk.…

Racial injustice in America: the black man In recent times, there have been series of incidents involving the police and the black man. Because of the never-ending systemic racism, racial profiling, racial inequality, and police brutality that black people experience in the hands of the police and the justice system, the Black Lives Matter movement was formed. It was formed to raise awareness for these biased treatments that black people encounter. They help people and families affected by injustice simply by organizing protests, but despite the awareness and pressure for racial injustice to stop, there is always another incident; either a police officer killing an innocent black person, or a white person getting a ‘slap on the wrist’ for a hate…

As long as the American history goes, the majority race was White, but the demographics are changing. In the different waves of immigrants is when race played a huge factor. There was a lot of conflict within the white race amongst classifications. It was not until other races started entering the United States of America, that race was constructed. I really do not think that white would let go of their privilege in order to benefit all women, including women of color.…

Discrimination Toward African Americans African Americans have always been subjected to inequality and discrimination since the seventeenth century. Between the early seventeenth century and eighteenth century, slavery had been fairly common. As a result, many people never treated African Americans fairly because people often identified African Americans as slaves, regardless if they were free or not. By the end of the eighteenth century, slavery was beginning to be abolished, but only in the northern part of the United States. From the years 1789 to 1831, as free African Americans started to increase in amount, they sought and struggled for economic and political rights and also tried to defend them, while African American slaves showed resistance…

I came in with assumptions about my own culture, ignoring all of the changes that happen as an individuals adapt when they migrate to another country. Individuals assimilate the culture they are now in and see themselves different form those that just came to the country. This is especially true with families that have been in the United States for more than one generation. They have grown up with an American culture that is hard to integrate as a first generation immigrant.…
