Movie scholars take note of shot sizes, lighting, and editing of films in relation to American culture and ideas. They look at what each film is trying to explain and whether or not it does a good job presenting itself. American film isn’t always trying to go for the artistic side of film, it leans towards the stories each film can tell. No matter the story, American film seems to go for a distinct formula called the “Hero’s Quest”. In it, you’ll find that the main protagonist(s) of the story goes through a similar phase of steps that ultimately make up the entire story. Joe Johnston’s October Sky surely is an example of the hero’s quest. The main protagonists, the Rocket Boys, goes through the different stages as the hero as they are presented with a call to adventure from their ordinary world of Coalwood, WV. When they are challenged to create a model rocket for the science fair, at first most of them are reluctant, but they get help from a wise man, a welder, who can help them out with any metal work. They soon establish a place to launch their rockets, their own special world, as they face tests, allies, and enemies along the way. In their most daring quest, they must overcome a supreme ordeal, which is getting the rocket over to nationals. With this, they seize their ultimate weapon of knowledge and create a rocket good enough to qualify. But when they get back, they find that Coalwood is not in the same shape …show more content…
Many film companies today are clashing with other companies from across the globe to intertwine their story styles for a more unique film. For example, the American film The New World has the storyline of both a European film and an American film. We see this depiction of the founding of Jamestown as an American tale, as this film follows the hero’s journey, but at the same time does not. Captain John Smith is introduced into this new world of North America as he assimilates with the natives. However, his attitude towards them changes after he spends time with them, eventually falling in love with the legendary Pocahontas. We see Captain John Smith go through phases as his attitude towards a new world changes, yet, the everyday struggles of Jamestown survival changes the story dramatically and creates an unpredictable nature that we don’t see in American film.
