PSA (Public Speaking Anxiety) among Non-native English Specialization Students
Anxiety is a basic human emotion consisting of fear and uncertainty that typically appears when an individual perceives an event as being a threat to the ego or self esteem (Harris and Coy, 2003). There are various types of anxiety, including generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, separation anxiety, agoraphobia, panic disorder and social anxiety (Wikipedia). Fear of public speaking, performance anxiety, communication apprehension, stage fright or fear of negative evaluation can all be considered as forms of social anxiety (Blode, Kint, Miers & Westerberg, 2009; McConnell, 2009). A number of rearchers have investigated the soures of public speaking anxiety. Several reseachers have stated that the stem of PSA ( public speaking anxiety) are public speaking skill, fluency in a foreign language, emotional predisposition toward public speaking and characteristics of the public speaking situation itself (Beatty, 1998) (Beatty, Balfantz & Kuwabara, 1989) (Beatty & Frielent, 1990). Ippus & Daly(1999) found that there are nine factors descriptive of the beliefs people have for why speakers experience stage fright. This research looks at the causes and their degrees on public speaking anxiety. The main focuses are language, personality and outside effects . Various demographic information was also compared to each of those to determine which effects have the highest impact to cause anxiety. The current study is seeking to explain the levels of public speaking anxiety. Surveys allowed the researchers to obtain an accurate report on the feelings of a large sample of participants. While taking surveys, participants often become more willing to share personal information than any other method, therefore reliability is increased (Watt & Van den Berg, 1995
