Communication Case Study Lucy

Beginning with birth to about age two, Mr. Sanchez was asked about his daughter Lucy’s development. Mr. Sanchez indicated that Lucy accomplished many milestones such as crawling at about the age of six months, eating finger foods around eight months and walking two weeks before her first birthday. He further explained that Lucy did not appear to have experienced any difficulty in achieving these milestones nor did any appear easier but rather average from his observation. From these answers it is apparent that Lucy was well within the range of biosocial development and consistent with Berger’s chapter on the first two years (Berger 2012).
Concerning language, Mr. Sanchez was asked if Lucy spoke any single words or sentences to which he replied

Sanchez was asked how many languages did Lucy speak or understand and if more than one did she favor one over the other. Mr. Sanchez noted Lucy understood and spoke two languages. Moreover, she did not appear to favor one over the other but was quite interesting to see how she automatically tailored her communication appropriately. For example, Mr. Sanchez explained Lucy knew Spanish was the only means of communication with her grandmother and English was the only means of communication with an aunt who did not speak Spanish. Mr. Sanchez further pointed out that she did not favor one language over the other. However, Lucy was molded to favor English over Spanish once she began preschool as Spanish was discouraged by school administrators. For example, she was automatically placed in ESL regardless of how well her English capabilities were. Mr. Sanchez further pointed out that he disliked the notion of discouraging Lucy from speaking Spanish at school however he did not want her to be subjected to any alienation or ridicule at school just as he experience as a child. It was difficult explaining to Lucy that she could not speak Spanish at school but she grasped the concept quickly and left her Spanish for at home only. Lucy’s cognitive development includes what Berger cited as a balanced bilingual. Sanchez was asked if Lucy displayed any noticeable concerns over her body image during adolescence to which he replied no. Mr. Sanchez further pointed out that she was not necessarily concerned with her body image however her clothing and hair fashion appeared to be somewhat important to her. Moreover, he noted that she was not overly concerned about fashion but one can look back and see the many changes in her fashion choices. Mr. Sanchez indicated that fashion and style was important to Lucy especially when there was an environment change. For example, when living in urban areas she tailored her fashion as such, then once relocated to a rural area her fashion again was retailored. Mr. Sanchez believe this was just a phase or was her ways of trying to fit in.
