The Importance Of Public Service In America

Improved Essays
One of the most controversial topics in today’s society is that should some sort of public service be required. Public service is “something that is done to help people rather than to make a profit” (Merriam-Webster). Public service is so controversial that three out of five Americans support the idea of public service being required. “Roughly three in five Republicans (58%), Democrats (61%), and Independents (58%) agree that some sort of public service should be required.”(Three in five Americans). These statistics show that around sixty percent of Americans support required public services. Public services does not only help out the community but it can also provide many benefits to the person who is doing public service.

With the price of higher education on the rise, I feel that students are going to need all the financial resources they can get. “In its most recent survey of college pricing, the College Board reports that a "moderate" college budget for an in-state public college for the 2014–2015 academic year averaged $23,410.” (“What’s the price”). Making a trade of public service for financial aid would result in the willingness to serve in a majority of people. Like financial aid, scholarships are also very helpful to students. If people offered scholarships to those who have participated in public service, I feel that those who are wanting to attend college would be more willing to engage in public service, and they would more likely get scholarships. “Students who participate in volunteering opportunities may be able to find more scholarships than they would without such experience.” (“12 …show more content…
Participating in public service allows you to have a great sense of self-worth along with responsibility and pride. When you realize that by engaging in public service you have helped people will give you a great deal of responsibility. It also builds a sense of pride when people see that all the hard work they are putting in is actually helping those in their community. To sum everything up, sixty percent of Americans support the idea of requiring public service. The enforcement of public service could easily be achieved through that of guaranteeing financial aid for higher education, and engaging in public service can strengthen your skills along with learning new skills. Learning these skills can also open up more job

In Serve or Fail, the author, Dave Eggers, brings up the point that community service should be required in colleges. According to Eggers, “college is too long-it should be three years-and even with a full course load and part-time jobs there are many hours in the days and weeks that need killing.” He believes that with all of the free time that students have, they should do something productive and helpful like community service. Additionally, Eggers thinks that if colleges were to require community service, then it would not only improve their working environment, but it would also touch and improve each student. I would agree with Eggers because I have found out that when colleges require community service, it increase their students’ self-efficiency, boost their teamworking skills, and helps them find a sense of responsibility.…

Since I have been given the opportunity to fill out the application for the Honor Society and write this essay, I clearly have demonstrated skill in the Scholarship area. However, that still leaves three other areas. First is the area of Leadership. I have been entrusted by my peers to serve in various leadership positions both in the school and through other activities that I am involved with, which range from Class President to serving as a member of the school's Peer Leader Team.…

Most schools increase their price to subsidize financial aid for low-income students if that system was removed and the state and federal government issue a certain amount of money for each student, the cost of education could be significantly lower (Samuels,…
