The purpose of this research paper is to provide information that will help people understand different ways to protect themselves and their children while online. This research paper will inform readers with tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft. After reading this paper people will understand the different types of computer and cyber crimes, steps on how to protect kids online and recommendations when using a different computer network more safely.

Kids need to report to their parents if anybody says or does something that makes them feel uncomfortable or threatened. When talking to your kids about Internet safety, parents should cover 3 main ideas that include inappropriate conduct, contact, and content. Inappropriate conduct is how they would act when online. Kids should be aware of people online that could try and hurt them and get sensitive information from them. This includes bullies, predators and scammers. Make sure your children know not to share personal information or photos. This includes their full name, mailing address, telephone number, the name of their school, or any information that could allow someone to figure out whom they are, where they go to school at and where they live.
Finally, parents should cover inappropriate content. Examples may include pornography websites and violence on the Internet. Another great tip for families trying to protect their children is that parents should place their family computer in a family area of the home. Great family areas include the family or living room, rather than in a child’s bedroom.
